Just to Shane Chalke’s 1983 861 MV Agusta warming up as he blips the sends the hairs on the back of my standing on end. As he rolls up to us, the sound of the Magni’s engine the quiet of his rural Virginia with the most raucous, mechanical shriek I can remember. For in my life, I’m rendered speechless.

next to Motorcycle Classics Richard Backus, I notice we are at each other with dumb, slack-jawed grins communicate the mutual realization we are sharing a motorcycle lifetime

Sound ideas

Shane blipping the throttle to get the 861 Magni MV up to temperature, and as he does my mind me back to the vintage festival at the Motorsports Museum in Alabama in when I had my first real of the legendary MV Agusta sound. At memorable event, Backus and I met Sir Surtees, uniquely famous for the only man ever to win world on both two wheels and four. At we watched Surtees, now 73 but still as ever on the track, making laps on his MV Agusta race one of the very bikes he rode to a championship in the late 1950s.

As intense as that experience watching a legend in motion, and and listening as they warmed up his legendary bike in the pit area, I to say Shane’s 861 Magni MV Agusta better to me.

Snarling through its individual, handmade Magni GP exhaust pipes on idle, winding up to a phenomenal crescendo as roars off down his driveway, Magni MV Agusta has risen to one on my chart of best motorcycle knocking off any bevel-drive Ducati Conti pipes and Dell’Orto and even my old beloved three-cylinder Shane should be selling CDs of this intoxicating Italian making hot laps on the racetrack.

The experience

Getting a chance to see one of hand-built 861 Magni MV Agusta one of the highlights of my 30 years on two wheels, and it is more of the same — but readying to actually ride it is close to

I have ridden more motorcycles, but that doesn’t the fact that the Magni MV is the prize of Shane’s personal One of only a handful built, it is so so valuable the thought of even it has me quaking in my bike boots. when the venue is West Summit Point Raceway, a I have never seen, and one seems to have far too many barriers for my tender disposition.

in the saddle, however, there is a level of business as usual to calm my frayed nerves. But in the somewhat heavy clutch (a unit made by Magni) and the starter button signals the is about to begin, and I feel my rising again.

Discretion and

Gently rolling on the throttle to get a for how quickly the engine revs and how far I to twist it, I make a point of my lungs with air a couple of Next, it’s clutch in and toe under the shift lever in to lift it into first Pausing for a moment to work the lever in and out a few times to fully the rasping noise coming the dry clutch, I’m aware Shane is and I get back to business.

The thought of to shift upside down on the isn’t adding much as I ease out the clutch and gently some throttle. I’m immediately by a sound from the dry clutch a chain jumping off its sprockets. My passes redline as I let the clutch out while picking up the throttle.

I’m instantly transported to a mechanical as the liquid smooth, inline engine propels me forward an eager rush, the accompanying symphony rising with my throttle hand puts me in the motorcycle moment. Watching the tachometer needle rising and in time with the accompanying track, I’m extremely happy to a tinted visor on my Arai, so no one can see my grin.

Shane had alerted us of a problem that is causing the MV Agusta to stutter around and I’m happy to use this as the rev limiter for of hurting this rare, engine. Rolling around the Summit Point circuit, the feels very spacious, with my thoughts that the would have a restricted crouch. While the pegs are when combined with the reach to the clip-on handlebars the has more of a sport-touring feel.

coming close to tossing Ducati 900SS a few laps (due to over-inflated tires and not my for a change), for the first couple of on the Magni I’m locked somewhere solid fear and child-like Celebrating the glorious noise the makes when letting off the every single gear is the stuff gear heads of when they are tucked up in bed at

Mental workout

Picking up down the long back the bike tracks true the fast left-hander, and I’m almost to feel comfortable. Cancel thought. Hauling on the anchors, the GP2 calipers do a good job of clamping the full-floating rotors. Unfortunately, the 40mm forks need pre-load to limit the dive.

The needs to be slowed also, to the wheel from jumping at me as I come off the brakes to turn in. I didn’t try running it into the before braking, so this in a straight line, but it’s not the sort of moment you want to be on a bike like the Magni.

area of the track also me a lesson in close-ratio gearboxes, as I the throttle and lift up on the gear to drop down into instantly chirping the rear and flicking the bike a tad sideways. I pull in the clutch and make a note to lose more before attempting this again.

With this in I begin entering the higher turns on the brakes, waiting to shift until I have off the correct amount of speed. to modern bikes with clutches that take the out of downshifting, it definitely takes mental re-programming, and only to the degree of difficulty I experience Shane’s pride and joy around the

The thunder rolls

As the laps by, the sky grows darker and more by the second, occasionally interrupted by forking through the murky Not wanting to end the day in tragedy, I maintain my pace while absorbing sound and experience the Magni is at me. Running under the bridge, I let the pull through its mid-rpm spot and find myself in my helmet as the bike really to pull hard.

Noticing crouched by the track with his in hand, I wonder if he can hear me the Magni’s pipes.

Streaking the fast right hander on noise, before standing the up and getting hard on the brakes for the left hander at the top of the hill, I get my out early and my body weight to the inside. Clicking down through the gears, it’s to muscle it back to the right the slow section before into the downhill left.

the exit, hanging way off and rolling on the the Magni holds a tight without stress or drama as we through the fast left and toward the long straight. in, clicking up the gears with the four wailing its soulful beneath me, I know as I accelerate the straight that few two-wheeled will ever come to the magic of this one.

And then the rain comes. a few raindrops smeared across my I instantly roll off, sit up and back to the pits before the hits.

Grinning from ear to I can see my excitement reflected in the faces of his friend Aaron and Backus. I not only just been to ride the last 861 Magni MV built (it was constructed in 1993), but enough to ride it as Arturo had intended, with the bike admirably and not giving a single at my sloppy riding skills.

We at Classics owe a sincere debt of to Shane Chalke for not keeping rare exotic in a climate-controlled and for regularly stretching its legs on the It was an honor and a highlight of my riding — one that I am happy to have with editor Backus, and one the of us will talk about for to come. MC
