2013 MV Agusta F3

MV Agusta is attempting a breakthrough in the class of pure sport 600 cc, one of the most hotly contested bike market. A success?

Sister of the F4, the new 2013 MV Agusta F3 focuses on an obvious family resemblance as well as a more affordable price to attract not only looks but also, this time, accolades. Despite its dazzling beauty, the F4 is far from being a particularly popular model. Offering a 675 cc  version rather than 1000 cc and lowering the price by $ 10,000 compared to the F4RR, the brand established in Varese, Italy, hopes to increase significantly its sales volume.

The class of pure sport 600 cc in which falls the 2013 MV Agusta F3 is nevertheless one of the most hotly contested of the motorcycle market. Does the small Italian brand really have the necessary resources to create such a sporty bike that legitimately belongs to this class, but which would also provide any added value in terms of performance? If the answer is not a definite  yes or no, it leans more towards yes.

Take a seat at the controls of the MV Agusta F3 and the impression of compactness is immediate. More than anything, it is the thinness of the frame that impresses. By opting for a configuration with three cylinders rather than four and bringing some ingenious solutions to minimize the size of the motor, the width of the entire motorcycle has been drastically reduced.

Because of this compact, thin and light physical appearance, it contributes to building an almost instantaneous trust with the driver. Even in a class defined by exceptionally lightweight and intuitive behaviors, the 2013 MV Agusta F3 impressed by behaving with absolute accuracy by not interfering with the driver’s intentions and allowing for finer riding adjustments. According to MV Agusta, this almost telepathic quality is attributable to a rotating crankshaft in the opposite direction of the wheels, reducing the gyroscopic effect and improving the maneuverability.

Perhaps even more remarkable than the quality of the ride is the power of the three-cylinder engine. Like the Triumph Daytona 675, it “cheats” a little by offering a displacement of 675 cc instead of 600 cc traditional 4-cylinder, but who’s complaining? In addition to a very respectable approach to push the red zone 15 000 rev / min, what is most surprising is the strength of the acceleration at around 10 000 rev / min, a regime where some 4-cylinders haven’t even begun to awaken.

And then there’s the divine sound coming from the intake that only the diver  really hears. Delicious!

However, the 2013 MV Agusta F3 is not flawless and if it has an Achilles heel, it is the quantity of its electronic systems. The only motorcycle with this cylinder capacity providing  traction control, the little sister of the F4 offers a wide range of adjustments from the choice of ignition maps to the sensitivity of the accelerator through the possibility of varying brake force motor and assisted gear shifting.

During the presentation of the model, these systems have not worked perfectly, while in other cases, the effects were rather a source of confusion that even the staff of the brand struggled to understand. It is a brave attempt by the small manufacturer, but will likely take a little more time to refine.

Like many of the qualities offered by the MV Agusta F3 are already proposed by the Triumph Daytona 675, a potential buyer might ask: why opt for a little known brand that is just beginning to establish themselves here? And they would be right, at least until the reputation of the brand and its products is established.

For others, however, exclusivity and the lines of the  MV Agusta F3 will be irresistible. Thank them, because they are the ones who really will say when the model matures.
