Road Test: MV Agusta 910

It’s late on a Friday near Varese, and I’m back to MV’s factory an enjoyable few hours aboard the Brutale. In no great rush, making use of the four-cylinder motor’s short-shifting through the ‘box and the ample midrange to zip past with a minimum of effort.

it occurs to me: bloody hell, is a Brutale I’m riding!

The larger-capacity version of the Brutale the craziest of all … hooligan and here I am riding it. well, if not then at least fairly I haven’t even pulled a for 20 minutes. The new MV has the performance alright, just that its more personality doesn’t demand a frantic riding style.

You wouldn’t guess that the two were so different unless ridden them, because they’re almost identical. chassis layout is unchanged that of the 750’s, so the steel-and-aluminium holds 50mm Marzocchis and the single-sided swingarm operates a monoshock. Minor mods a 120/70, not 120/65 front adjustable footrests and a quick-release sprocket.

The important stuff is in motor, which gets its new capacity from a larger and …. Bolting in the engine the 1000S was ruled out because 998cc unit has a longer, … and is taller, so wouldn’t fitted the Brutale frame surgery.

The 160cc capacity hike, with an increased 13:1 ratio, gives worthwhile performance. Peak power is a 136bhp at 11,000rpm, 9bhp up on the More importantly the bigger kicks out a whopping extra at 7900rpm, the revs at which its torque figure of 71lb.ft is This Brutale’s personality was the moment I rode out through the MV gates.

The bigger motor’s midrange meant that the throttle with five showing on the white-faced tacho the MV leaping forwards — when I was in first gear, the wheel reaching for the sky. No for the frantic cog-swapping required by the 750.

But even this motor 4000rpm showing before it strongly, so the Brutale didn’t quite the low-rev kick of Speed Triple. But the grunt there on made the MV more to ride, and for many riders make it a more appealing The Marelli injection’s response was and the unchanged six-speed gearbox as as ever.

There was plenty of at the top end too. Keeping the throttle in the higher gears had the digital showing over 130mph in a few as the MV headed for a top speed that approach 160mph if your muscles were up to it.

But although the bigger motor more of a midrange punch, the cubes mean it has lost of the 750’s smoothness and high-revving The slight high-frequency tingle the bars wasn’t a problem on my but would combine with the riding position to make trips a pain.

The 910 motor more sensible than the equivalent but the chassis did its best to brain-out behaviour. Maybe the new front tyre gave a less quick-steering feel, but the MV was very flickable. Suspension was and well-damped, and combined with Michelin Pilot Powers and of ground clearance to make the a match for almost anything in the

Six-pot Nissins gave stopping power, too.

I had a time on the bigger Brutale, but the between this and the 750cc which is still available at an £10,500, is not an easy one. assumed the 910’s extra would make it clearly but, although it’s and to ride, it has lost a little of the bluster that makes the 750 so fun.

For those who value thrills over practicality, the 750 has the while the 910 is the better all-rounder. will probably opt for the larger but personally I’m not so sure. I I was in a position to make that for real.

A grunty, flexible excellent chassis and stop-and-stare looks, but some may prefer the high-revving lunacy.
