I delivery of an Aprilia Sportcity 250 a month ago and wanted to post thoughts on the bike. The Aprilia a Reflex that was totaled in an

First Impressions

The Sportcity is a new in 2007. It came to the US to replace the 250. I’ve never seen a Beo 250, so I can’t any thoughts on the differences or similarities the two.

Since I have the Reflex to compare with the my impressions of the latter have to be with the former in mind.

I took delivery the bike had 25 on the clock. The dealer explained as they assemble each new they take them for a test ride to check for rattles, leaks, throttle brakes and so on.

The ride from the to my house (about 15 miles) confirmed what I was told. It was solid, the brakes worked and the bike performed flawlessly.

My impressions produced some emotions:

The Sportcity is clearly than the Reflex. It is a bit shorter, has less foot room on the and is lighter by about 50 pounds. One is the seat height. It’s two to three inches taller the Reflex.

As a result I can only flat one foot at a time. It’s but I would prefer to flat both sides. I’m 6 with a 32 inch inseam, by the

The Sportcity does not have a stand. What were thinking! The lighter weight it easier than the Reflex to get up on the stand.

The instrumentation does not a tachometer. No tach will be no big for me. The speedometer is analog. The clock, and temperature gauges are digital.

also a digital volt

There’s much less under the seat than on the My full face modular XL won’t quite fit. The gas cap is under there and feeds the 2.4 tank. (The dealer it should be good for 70 mpg.

I got 62 my Reflex and a friend claims 65 on A real gripe – the recommendations are in European ratings not US. Some folks on another said to go with 87 and switch up if it Sigh.)

The battery lurks a panel at the front of the floorboard.

a very small two-sided box” inside the front leg The skimpy tool kit resides and takes up a goodly share of the on the right side. For the smokers, you can a pack of cigarettes into the area.

However, that’s the location for the cell phone so pack accordingly. The left is almost useless-maybe sunglasses?

Immediately above the glove box is a bag holder, but the owner’s manual discourages you from using it swinging weight, you know.

The rack is a plastic/heavy vinyl-type The warning sticker places the limit at 15 pounds. I’ll get a top case for it because of the cramped storage.

Gotta have a for the rain suit, walk-around tire repair kit and such.

The impression was the ride. Smooth, it very well. There’s a bit spring travel, but those 15 wheels are really what it. Much smoother riding the Reflex.

The Sportcity is fuel and makes for very smooth response. Even though are both 250cc engines, the is much torquier than the My Reflex had the K-modification done to it, made for a much better from a … stop and the … spot between 30 and 40, but it had a fair amount of vibration the range. The Sportcity doesn’t.

really twist-n-go. Almost no from a … stop all the way to 50. I get the break-in done, the real will be performed – stop to my comfort zone top

Speaking of the break-in period, the is rather vague on the subject. For it recommends riding on lots of roads for the first 60 miles. The To get the steering, shocks, and brakes in.

Then work up to about 300 at limited speeds and varying usage to work on the engine and train. Then do moderate usage up to about 600 miles at point they want you at the dealer for the first service.

And of the manual, I won’t, except to say in two languages, with side-by-side in English and French, no index and so damn many bold warnings and cautions that one is discouraged from reading it. not boldfaced is in a tiny font. I the manual as a PDF file on Aprilia’s and downloaded that.

I can at least it to make the tiny print a bit legible.

That’s about it at point. More later as the builds.

Following the above by several days, I attended a of our scoot club. After the we decided to take a ride. By the I returned home I’d another 75 or so miles. The weather was hot and humid, and there was a wind of 25 or so out of the northwest. Our ride was on both and byways.

Speed limits from 25 to 55.

That said, are additional impressions.

— lack of space under the is a real pain in the …. And to the seat there is a key lock on the below the seat AND below a in the plastic panel. Standing the bike (i’m a six footer) and downward, i have to lean to see the lock.

For me, an inconvenience, for shorter riders no big deal.

And on the subject of storage, I need to get a top box. I’ve been a big fan of them because of my of aesthetics – that is, I they “spoil the lines” of However I feel about it, a top box is a evil.

Since I’m observing break-in mileage I it a little on a stretch of highway we in the ride and I had a difficult time up with the leader. Once past the 300 mile mark fairly obvious there be problem. The scoot moves out to my self-imposed 55 limit and there was a bit of twist left in the throttle. The should be good for upwards of

I think 80 might be possible, but would be well beyond my comfort zone.

Since I really been on a bike in a month, and it was very hot out, my got pretty uncomfortable after 50 of the miles and I greeted the odd stop and stop light with the of being able to stand up and let my cool off. The ride, was as good as my initial impressions earlier. Those big wheels and the spring travel make for a comfortable ride.

I think the seat might a bit less padding than the but I’m not really sure.

In to ride comfort I should the handling. It handles very It may be for a couple of reasons: the big tires, and the weight. It goes where you it and takes curves very

I’ve always been of really tight turns but finding the bike to be pretty to make those turns.

A on the weight: I find it very to move around in the garage. only about 50 pounds than the flex, but it just so much easier to push while in the saddle or on your turning it around. The Sportcity is inches shorter than the so that may also contribute.

The ran very nicely without a anywhere along the line. It may be of the fuel injection, but I couldn’t a “… zone” anywhere the throttle range – unlike the Reflexes with the size engine. The Reflex right from the git-go and has a spot between about 30 and 40 but fairly well both and below that range.

really benefit from the While there is some (all “thumpers” ((one bikes)) do that), the Sportcity’s particularly noticeable.

I still know about the gas mileage. At the end of the I was down to two “bars” on the gas gauge and ahead and filled it. The 1.75 it took worked out to about 62 mpg but I been careful of noting the so I’m waiting for the next

The Sportcity comes with a small windshield (mentioned and is comparable in size to the one on the Reflex model. Mine was the regular so the windshield was much taller and did an job deflecting wind from upper body and helmet. I was in feeling the difference and this (with the above mentioned winds) was a pretty good

Lo and behold, we were well the ride before I even about it. I wear a full helmet, but I didn’t even feel any undue wind on my The only time I noticed the was when it was coming from the and I had to lean into it a little

at this point i’m with the Sportcity.
