A Sheepish Automatic Transmission in Wolf’s Clothing

Just Aprilia’s Shiver or the super Ducati Streetfighter. the 2009 Mana 850 ($9,899) is a … that hangs its mechanical out in the open. But unlike those the Mana has a feature you’ll find in a scooter: an automatic

The Goods

The $9,899 Aprilia 850 is powered by a fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, 839 cc engine that produces 76 and 8,000 rpm, routing gases through a two-into-one steel exhaust system. The automatic gearbox is a CVT (continuously transmission) that can be overridden in mode. read more its operation in the Throw a Leg Over

Up front is a non-adjustable, 43mm fork and radially mounted 320mm double stainless disk brakes. At the rear is an alloy single-piece swingarm a spring preload and rebound-adjustable shock absorber, and 260mm steel single-piston brake. The is constructed of a high-strength steel structure, and the seat is 31.4 high.

Fuel capacity is 4.2 gallons, and dry (without fluids) is 440 pounds.

Apart from its transmission, the Aprilia Mana 850 has a few odd that separate it from bikes. For starters, a false tank lifts to reveal a bin big enough for a full-face helmet, and a brake operates with a lever. Then there are the shifting options, selected via a on the right grip: you get three modes (Touring, Sport, and and Sport Manual.

In any of the auto modes, the Mana almost like a power trapped in the body of a motorcycle it sounds like one, In either auto or manual you can push a left grip-mounted button (or depress the “shift at your feet) to downshift, but you “upshift” in auto mode it back into automatic.

You get a little more control in Manual mode: you can upshift or by pushing the “+” and “-“ buttons on the left or via the aforementioned foot lever, and way the CVT will downshift for you if you slow The synthetically produced gear go from 1-7, and if you try to “shift” too a ! symbol appears on the dash. manual mode lets you off the rev limiter if that’s your and the ‘box won’t override you and in manual mode.

The chassis is a bit squishy and the non-adjustable suspension dives under and I’m not sure why the Mana doesn’t with anti-lock brakes it will no doubt attract But the 839cc V-twin produces a 76 horsepower, and you most likely crave more power you’re a literbike addict.

The Line

Is the Aprilia Mana for If you’re a performance enthusiast, not. But if you absolutely, positively shift gears, the Mana is one of few in the realm of automatic transmission
