Aprilia Mana 850 in India preview

Does anyone here know Aprilia? Well, we suppose that those watching all those motorcycle racing would definitely relate to them. After all, Aprilia is the one which has bagged approximately 45 world championship belts and is also said to one of the most successful motorcycle manufacturers in Europe. However, this manufacturer didn’t have a solid mid level naked street bike in their portfolio. What they had were some entry level bikes and then the top end ones.

To fill up the void in the middle, they have the Aprilia Mana 850. We have the preview of the Aprilia Mana 850 in India here for you.

Aprilia have positioned the Mana 850 to be an entry level motorcycle in India even though globally its put in as mid of the level variant. It was only in 2007 that the Mana made its world debut. Design cues point both to the naked look as also something which bulky scooters have. The head lamps have an oval design to them, something which most naked bikes have.

A steel trellis frame and front forks which are upside down add to the design flair. The fuel tank is actually not the fuel tank and is a plastic case for storage. Infact, the fuel tank is situated beneath the seats. Imagine pulling out a full size helmet from the fuel tank.

Moreover, Aprilia have provided for a light inside the plastic casing. There are two ways to open up this fuel tank cum storage compartment. One is via the handlebar and the other is a manual lever which would open up the flap. The latter is located under the seat. The entire design is built on Italy’s famous trellis frame.

Split seats with the rear passenger getting a higher set perch is the order of this day for the Mana. The cans at both the sides feel like they have been lifted off a Yamaha Fazer.

The instrument cluster doesn’t have a rev counter and in its place there is a big LCD counter which displays the gear that this bike is in, temperature, fuel gauge and also the tripmeter and other related stuff. Sitting stride this motorcycle is akin to sitting atop the FZ16. The emphasis is more on relaxed riding rather than outright sporty behavior. Driving home this point is the automatic transmission. Yes, you read this right.

This is a bike which has got an auto transmission and it is the only other sports bike in India apart from the Honda VFR1200 to offer this. The buttons to upshift as also down shift manually are placed near the horn on the left side. Most of the riders would use their thumb to upshift and index finger to execute a downshift. Unlike the VFR1200, this is a CVT and has preset 7 ratios.

The gearbox can be controlled both in auto as also manual mode.

It is said that the bike rides very well and infact its competition like the Ducati 750 or even the Suzuki Bandit would have a hard time complying with its plush ride quality. On the handling front, it handles neutrally. Given its 184 kgs kerb weight its reasonably nimble even to ride in heavy traffic conditions. There is progressive power as also a gentle bite to the all disc setup. Aprilia, just like Honda, have a non ABS as also ABS setup in their bikes.

The 839 cc V twin engine has a longitudinal setup to it with a Single Overhead Cam. This engine manages to extract 76 ps of power at 8000 rpm and 73 Nm of torque at 5000 rpm. Performance is not potent enough but then it manages to make light work of city commuting or even highway traveling.

There are three modes attached to the Mana’s powertrain. Those are the Sport, Touring and also Rain. In the last mode, the ECU manages to alter the torque delivery of the bike thus making it less slippery in wet conditions. Touring mode enhances the fuel efficiency by maintaining a linear power delivery while the more advanced Sport mode brings out better throttle response as also peak power.

All this while maintaining a steady fuel efficiency of about 20 kmpl. Now that’s good figures for a bike which has got a 800 cc heart.

Considering that Aprilia have just set foot here, the Aprilia Mana 850 in India would be a success story that the company can look forward to, if they price it right. The Aprilia Mana 850 price in India stands at Rs 10.36 lakhs and this price is ex-show room, Pune. As of now, the company has a single dealer in the country and are bringing in their bikes via the CBU route.
