EXTRAORDINARY WIN FOR EUGENE LAVERTY IN RACE1 AT JEREZ WITH A DRAMATIC PASS IN THE LAST TURN. 25 POINTS THAT CONSECRATE APRILIA AS 2013 SUPERBIKE MANUFACTURER WORLD CHAMPION. A DROP IN PHYSICAL FITNESS DURING THE SECOND HALF OF THE RACE KEPT SYLVAIN GUINTOLI FROM ATTACKING THE PODIUM.

Jerez, 20 October 2013 – With the peremptory win in Race1 at Jerez Eugene Laverty secured the 2013 Superbike Manufacturer World Championship title for Aprilia. This is the fifth World Championship title for the Italian brand in the last four years of WSBK and the second consecutive Manufacturer title.

The Spanish race was a battle between Laverty out front, starting from pole position, and Melandri, clearly the fastest two from the first lap. Eugene controller the race until two laps from the end when a decisive overtake by Melandri, hard on the brakes, forced them both to go wide, changing places when re-entering the track. Laverty closed the gap aggressively before astonishing fans by overtaking in the last turn.

For the Northern Irish rider this is the eighth win of the season.

Eugene Laverty: “The pass in the last lap was one of my best ones. I knew I had to try on that turn but I only had a fraction of a second to decide on the move. I would have been disappointed to finish second after leading the whole race basically from the beginning.

Marco overtook me quite aggressively and we both went wide, but there isn’t any problem because we cleared the air straight away. My compliments to Tom Sykes and his team. They ran an excellent race and they deserve the Rider Title”.

Sylvain Guintoli: “The important thing for me this race was to secure third place in the Championship and I managed to do that. I wanted to try and attack Tom but at the halfway point I started to get tired and my shoulder began to weaken so I wasn’t able to ride at my best. In any case this was a great season for Aprilia. Eugene and I showed that the RSV4 is the strongest bike on the starting grid.

We made up for each other. When he had some difficulties I earned important points and vice versa. I have no regrets.

To the contrary, I value the experience I gained this season which will be very important in 2014”.

Romano Albesiano, Aprilia Racing Manager: “The Manufacturer title is an important affirmation which is the merit of a perfect team and two riders who had an extraordinary season. It is rare to have two such important talents in the garage in the same season. Laverty and Guintoli have been in the battle for the world title since the first round.

With one race still left to go Laverty’s 8 wins are proof that he has added sports experience and consistent results to his natural speed. Guintoli led the championship for most of the season thanks to consistently exceptional performance and we thank them for the Manufacturer title that we won today”.
