It’s no secret that most of today’s high performance moto-x- motorcycle- ATV’s- watercraft engines are using various coatings on their cylinder bore- These coatings include Nickasil- ceramic compsite- and chrome-

The main reason why manufacturers use this process is primarily cost- You see in the old day’s manufacturers had to cast an iron sleeve- machine it- then put it into a mould and cast an aluminium cylinder around the sleeve- then machine the top and bottom face of the cylinder and match up the ports then bore and hone- Then the manufacturers had to supply dealers with over size pistons rings etc-

With a Coated cylinder they have to cast the cylinder then apply the coating direct to the bore- there are no over sizes pistons to make and keep in stock this is much easier for the manufacture- It was reported to be better as it gave more power for more power which is not true- the other myth is you can run a tighter piston to bore clearance but this is simply not true the 1988 YZ125 had a factory fitted cast iron sleeve and they switched to a coated bore in 1989 and they both had the same piston to bore clearance-

But after all this the cylinder still wears out

Many things promote cylinder and piston wear- Dirt entering the carburettor- pre-ignition- detonation- overheating- incorrect jetting- leaking head gasket- poor quality oil- not bringing the engine up to temperature before riding- Just to name a few-

When your coated cylinder is worn or damaged it can’t be re bored because the coating is very thin- At this point you have three options-

1- Re-coat the cylinder – See Our Cylinder Re-coating-

2- Buy a new factory cylinder -Way to expensive in most cases-

3- Re-sleeve the cylinder-

When we re-sleeve the cylinder- it’s fitted with a custom chrome molly iron cylinder sleeve- The sleeve will maintain all factory-porting specs- or in the case of a "race" ported cylinder it will retain the race porting- If the cylinder fitted with a sleeve and wears out you simply have it bored and fit a new oversize piston- infact if you have suffered a seize you can just hone it out- if you seize a coated bore it tends to pull the coating off rendering the cylinder scrape-

From The Start to the Finish Re-sleeving Process-

Your Aprilia RS125 cylinder barrel will stamped with a serial number- this is to help identify your cylinder and to make sure there is no mix up with other customers cylinders- We will then strip all bolts and power valves -if it came with any- clean and bored out the cylinder to make room for the new sleeve-

Making The Cylinder Sleeve

We Start Off With a Billet of Cast Iron from which we will make the new sleeve- we use a precision lathe to make the sleeve which is a "Top Hat" type- The outer diameter is precision ground to – 0-15mm bigger than the cylinder this is so the sleeve will be an interference fit- The bore of the sleeve is left 0-75mm under the finished bore size-

By now the cylinder will be having its ports mapped and transferred onto the new sleeve- this is to ensure you get the same porting as before-

With the sleeve ported and ready it’s fitted into the cylinder- we do this by heating up the cylinder in a purpose made oven for 15 minutes- this allows the cylinder to expand so we can drop in the new sleeve- it is then put under the press and allowed to cool-

Once cooled the ports are then hand blended in to the cylinder to give the smoothest possible flow- The cylinder is then vapour blasted to give it that new clean look- We then machine the top face of the cylinder to make sure it is 100- flat to provide a good gasket seal-

It’s then bored and honed to suit the piston that will be used and cleaned again before its ready to go back to you as good as new-
