Commuter Special: The 2008 Mana 850

The 2008 Aprilia 850. Nice styling, competent and suspension, 76bhp v-twin, gearbox. What more you ask for?

The Mana 850, was first shown at the 2006 in Milan, will now soon be in Aprilia showrooms worldwide. it seems to be a modern, smart and competent motorcycle overall, the 850’s calling card is its ‘Sportgear’ automatic transmission.

The bike does not have a lever – the gearbox can either be in the fully automatic ‘Autodrive’ or the rider can choose to shift manually, using the clutchless, shift mode. And you can flip and forth between the two modes, via a switch, even when the is running.

Automatic gearboxes on are not exactly new. The 1975 Guzzi V1000 Convert and the Honda CB400A Hondamatic had gearboxes, as does the current FJR1300AE. But, of course, the Mana 850’s auto unit, its more advanced electronics, is in a world altogether.

In fully automatic ‘Autodrive’ the rider can choose between settings – Touring, Sport and – and power delivery is optimized

In sequential manual shift the CVT gearbox gives you seven pre-defined ‘gear ratios’ to from, and the actual shifting can be via a conventional left-side foot or a switch that’s mounted on the side of the handlebar. And the best is, in manual mode, if you do not downshift slowing down (and/or coming to a complete stop…), the will still do it for you automatically!

The is a 90-degree, 8-valve, 839cc (developed by Aprilia themselves), makes 76 horsepower at the crank. sure, the Mana 850 is no GSX-R but the bike’s CVT system and its engine’s Marelli EFI system work to make sure that delivery is smooth and consistent at all The Mana’s ‘fuel tank’ is a storage compartment that can a full-face helmet, while is stored in a tank that’s under the rider’s seat.

Coming to the suspension, the Mana 850 has a USD fork up front, and hydraulic at the back, that’s adjustable for and rebound damping. The bike is with dual 320mm discs at the front with radial-mount calipers, and single rear disc.

To sum up, the 2008 Aprilia Mana 850 is a contemporary take on the middleweight, motorcycle. If we had to choose, we’d take the high-tech, good Mana 850, over like the BMW F800S, Honda Suzuki GSR600, Yamaha FZ6 or ER-6n. For pricing and other visit the Aprilia Mana here .
