Submitted by David Emmett on 2010-11-20 12:40

On Tuesday, Motorsports Park organized its teleconference of the year with the of the World Superbike championship. time, it was the turn of Max Biaggi to and he fielded questions from the on a range of subjects, from the of electronics in World Superbikes, on the of the Aprilia RSV4, on his thoughts on and on the prospect of a return to MotoGP. what Biaggi had to say:

. Good morning, everybody. you for joining us today. My name is Gardner, and I am the Media Manager for Motorsports Park. This be our final teleconference of the year riders from the Superbike Championship.

Today, we’re to have the 2010 Superbike Champion, Max Biaggi, with us. as you know, won 10 races this riding the No. 3 Aprilia RSV4 for Aprilia Alitalia Racing. He the weekends here at Miller Park as well as at Misano, and Portimao.

He also had single at his favorite track, Brno, as as at Magny-Cours.

So Max, welcome,

Max Biaggi . Yeah, well, hi. you. Thank you. How are

Moderator . Good. And congratulations on championship.

Max Biaggi . Yeah. very, very proud and for myself, of course. But we know a lot of were involved in this who helped make it possible.

. It’s the off-season now. are you doing during the off-season?

Max . Well, I’m checking out a few getting ready for traveling to the at the end of this month. We’re to test in Australia, so I’m a few things to be ready.

Moderator . And re-signed with Aprilia for two years, so that’s good

Max Biaggi . Yes. Yes. I I’m very happy for They asked me for two more racing with them and to try to confirm what we’ve in 2010. And everybody is very

Moderator . Looking down the what do you think about future in racing? You think will be it? Will you think retiring there or just going until you feel you don’t want to do it anymore?

Max . Well, when you make a result, the day after, of course, you about what you’ve and if you want to keep doing and if you have extra motivation to going. So it is always give and I won the championship in Imola.

The race that was at Magny-Cours and still I was really hard to get another and I did. So I think my hunger is there. So I still have a lot to do and not ready yet to think about different than motorcycles.

. You swept both races at Miller Motorsports Park past year. And the two guys done that have on to win the World Championship. Tell us, is a track that you like?

Or how it compare with the other you race on?

Max Biaggi . Yes, I always said from the time I’ve been that the track is simply It’s very safe, and smooth, and the tarmac is always We cannot ask for more than

Safety is the most important for riders. And that track is fantastic. I wish there many tracks like in America, but unfortunately, I’ve on other tracks and not one is close to one.

So congratulations to the guy who designed the and had the strength to build this of track in America.

Moderator . we appreciate that. And we’re forward to having you back May.

Operator, if you would, I think ready to open it up to the media

Operator . Our first question from David Swarts of World.

David Swarts . I to talk more about new two-year deal with because I think I read you did have to maybe stop and about if you wanted to continue. And I know if that was accurate, but did you to stop and think if you wanted to or do something else?

Max Biaggi . were offering me this for two years, but I asked them to me some time. For the fifth I am a World Champion, of course, and never enough. But I have my own and my little daughter is now 1 year And I have one more baby in few weeks.

And I was thinking like any human being whether it was the thing to do, because the family is up and my attention is most of the time for my world with all the people on this project. And I don’t to take anything from my so I stop and think first. I to have the approval from my and be sure that she’s if I’m still doing

And because she knows when involved in this, all my days, all day I’m thinking most of the about my motorcycle, about all the and what they are working on and how to

So after I got her approval, I was very to tell the headquarters of Aprilia I would continue. We didn’t negotiate so much, because it was not the money, it was just about the and whether I really wanted to do it or

But we got this deal done and now super happy and very, motivated.

David Swarts . You maybe the race at Imola was a for you and for your hunger to see if you still to continue also?

Max Biaggi . yeah, of course. For example, Imola, in Magny-Cours, with the Championship in my pocket, I still had left to win in the last race of the So that’s proven how I have so desire to win again.

And I’m not to think about something motorcycle racing.

Operator . Our question comes from Cameron of Cycle World

Kevin Cameron . Can you compare the of motorcycle electronics now in World with MotoGP when you last riding in that

Max Biaggi . Well, I first in MotoGP in 2005 and between the MotoGP bike and the 2010 there is a little bit of a gap in advanced Of course, in MotoGP they so much on this area, in Superbike, most of the manufacturers all their information from to Superbike; they just it from one bike to the other. just transfer.

For us, it is more because Aprilia doesn’t MotoGP bikes.

But more or like I said, we are a little bit MotoGP, but that’s good in a way, our bikes, the weight is 20 kilos more. And we have brakes, so electronics can maybe you even go faster, but it is better the way we do it really we have plenty of

Kevin Cameron . I see that are now more riders who are older And this makes me think of the of fighter planes. They to think that to fly a fighter, you to be young and crazy. But now, it that older men are the craftsmen of They know what doing and they do it safely.

I this is a big change for racing.

Max . In a way, it looks like Only a few people can really do I have no more than three people to tell you who are and still winning.

But of course, now the average age now is higher.

you speak to people who are 20 about 40 years of age, they 40 is old. Now, 20 years when you speak to 40-year-old men it seem as old as it did 20 years ago.

So is getting better. And, of everyone is looking younger before. And America is the place everybody cares about the no?

Kevin Cameron . But I think maybe racing is safer so it break people.

Max Biaggi . Ah, if you look 50, 40 years ago, of Racing was sometimes equal to so they raced on temporary with funny bikes and so on. they know that is Priority No.

1 for everybody, not only the but bikes and equipment, helmets, boots everything’s getting better and better, to try to save

Kevin Cameron . You seem to be happier in World Superbike you were in MotoGP. Can you comment on

Max Biaggi . Yeah, indeed. I am. from MotoGP to Superbike, I see the spirit that was missing

Here, it is pure racing and you wake up in the morning, you still to fight and run the track with all riders, and try to have fun. And not so difficult to have fun in Superbikes. it came very rarely in because everything is written — who can be competitive on the top two or three and who can never be there.

So it’s about the package that racing with.

So in Superbike, if you’re on the second or third row and package is still close to the who are winning races, it doesn’t it’s just if you feel you can do it or can fight for the win. It’s more up to you than to the package.

. Our next call comes Matthew Miles of Cycle Magazine.

Matthew Miles . I a question about your

Max Biaggi . Okay. Great.

Miles . What areas you like to see improved for 2011?

Max . Well, there are always things where you can improve all the but the perfect scenario is never to happen. But if there is only one I can ask for to be better; it’s the drivability of the so the kind of the power connection the drivability. That’s the area I would like to be improved for

Matthew Miles . Anything the chassis?

Max Biaggi . If I have a opportunity to ask, yeah, I like to be better on traction; traction. So thinking about the from the link to the suspension and traction.

Matthew Miles . Did you try a lot of setups or changes?

Max Biaggi . we always try to move things and there, up and down, just try to what you gain and what you when you move something And more or less, we know we are. And also, we can have better to test.

But it’s not easy. And I presume not so much change for us in 2011.

Matthew . Were you making those throughout the season?

Max Biaggi . if something’s coming to test, we always be happy to try it. It doesn’t if we have a test track. We are able and open to test the races.

Matthew Miles . One other question. Ducati its support from World for 2011. What is your of that decision?

Max Biaggi . that’s a poor decision, I have to say, because Superbike made them Before that, they almost nobody. Correct me if wrong, but I don’t remember speaking about Ducati they started to be successful in Superbike. After they so many good results and a everybody started to follow Ducati, Ducati.

So I’d have to say that for sure have to give so back to World Superbike and to the who invented the championship, and to pull out in way was really not the best thing to do.

But again, we cannot decide for people. We just see the facts. are still some privateer racing, and they proved can be faster than the Ducati riders.

So really, nothing’s but there’s no factory Ducati in Superbike. On the other hand, are still fast Ducatis look like factory

Operator . Our next question from Ron Lieback of Ultimate

Ron Lieback . Could you take us like your mental like what you do from the you get to the paddock at any race to the time finished?

Max Biaggi . Most of the it starts on Thursday, the day I come to the I’m always very, focused on what I’m And mentally, I’m into the working all day long on set up and things to with my engineer, even at

For example, before I go to sleep, I at details of telemetry and the time to check the section times, all the times, to see where I can improve, and if match with the, for for the gearbox decision, if it can be better or I’m always focusing much on details. And of course, I’m there, I’m not the person that I am when here at home because I’m so focused, I put all my energy it.

And that’s good because you are concentrating on what you do, when you a good result, you are even

Ron Lieback . What’s your for 2011? Who do you think your rivals will be?

Max Biaggi . Of I really would like to what I’ve done in But I’m very honest myself; clearly, it’s not to be easy and it will be even difficult. One more guy [Marco came from MotoGP and he be able to jump on the bike and be he is a World Champion. He’s proved he can win World Championships. So not something really new that he has to and use his ability to put up there on the No.

1 place. for example, Aprilia or BMW. it’s not only Yamaha, but and Honda; they will be very strong from the of the season. So everyone, even the riders now that they are one older and one year more will be more accurate, to not any points or make mistakes the year before.

So it will be but I’m really open to see is going to be. And my motivations come higher.

Ron Lieback . Since got so much experience on track, do you get a lot of the guys coming to you for information?

Max . Well, the young people and in a way, it’s kind of they tease me, you know? The me a lot of friends, a lot of energy, and I now have more competition than For some riders, maybe is a bad point; for me, it’s a really point.

Ron Lieback . What are thoughts about the return of Superbike to the Donington circuit?

Max . Donington was a very nice up and down, and some blind very, very challenging. It was good to race up there. happy to go back and race And I know the track is a little bit compared to two years ago.

Maybe some part of the they rebuilt. I’m on that. But most of the track is the same. I’m very to go back there. In England, Superbike is very popular.

I a lot of fans there and I can’t to go there.

Ron Lieback . When you home to your native how much different was your fan there compared to years

Max Biaggi . When coming to your hometown with World Championship in your of course, then everybody’s happy and smiling, and have a lot of feelings around me. Compared to the of course, my last World was more than 10 years And maybe some people it wasn’t going to happen

But I did it again, and like more 10 years after, so it was a little a dream come true for me.

Ron . What are your thoughts on riding with Ducati?

Max . Well, that was a good It was a good move for him because for in Yamaha, Lorenzo became the Champion. He knew he was going to it because, of course, he also had an but before that he was still the championship points and this guy was to take the No.

1 plate. So he was thinking getting out, or to find challenge, another solution. And I think, is good for him. But the big question mark is, Ducati’s been World Champion so it’s not going to be rosy to the — how to say it — to save the Stoner already did it.

And so he will be the second to make this of a victory if he’s going to next year.

But I’m that Rossi, he will it. I don’t know when, but I he will make it.

Operator . Our question comes from Davidson of

Matthew . For Aprilia to win the World Superbike in only its second year is impressive. What do you think the RSV4 a championship winner?

Max . If you go back to ‘09 and the way we started, I had so question marks in my head. But we a lot, and tested and tested and and just to give them the direction to follow. And it took time because it’s not so when you don’t have the background of four-strokes.

But they’ve they have the skill, with four-strokes. And together we the year. And two years is only 730 and it’s really a ridiculous of time to get the World Championship the way we did it.

So big congratulations to my team. My factory day and night to do this, and I’m hoping that there’s more to come. That’s my

Aprilia RSV4 Max Biaggi Replica

Matthew Davidson . How does most recent Superbike win in terms of your overall

Max Biaggi . Honestly, this Championship gives me so much because it came at a … I’m not that young and so I’m thinking more I do things. To get this kind of of when I’m almost 40, I appreciate much more before.

I live the moment more intensely than 10 or 15 ago. So that’s why I said Superbike World Championship, it thrilled me so much.

Matthew . If given the opportunity, would you consider racing in MotoGP

Max Biaggi . Well, only if came to me with a really project. Everything must be very nice to consider it. But at the really, I signed this with Aprilia for two years. I do not any question marks in my head. I want to stay in World

And it is so nice to be working with group of people. So, really, not so

Matthew Davidson . Being a countryman, have you and Valentino ever reconciled?

Max Biaggi . I think, in a way, we respect other. And even if we don’t, we are not friends. Everyone lives his Everyone has his own way to see things.

Everyone has his own and doesn’t see things from the angle.

But at the end of the day, we’re two top guy in the country and, really, just looking at myself and I can improve. So I think Rossi still do the same thing

Matthew Davidson . Heading the 2011 season, who would you as your biggest threat?

Max . I presume Ducati and Yamaha; have strong riders and good technicians. So Carlos Melandri, and Jonathan Rea with and I will put myself in the middle; why Haslam with BMW. will be the new face of 2011. will do some great I presume this.

But other that, this championship is nice because everyone can win You can see last year. But at the end of the day, you got to be consistent from the start to the

And we’ll try to do this again in

Matthew Davidson . For 2011, be joined once again by teammate, Leon Camier. How do you about this? And how do the two of you get along?

Max . I’m very happy Leon Camier. He’s a good rider and he had his own opportunity in 1 with Aprilia. And he will be better in year 2. But still, he can and he’s fast, and hopefully not than me!

I will be even but if not, we will try to improve the from my own way to work and from the he had in the BSB.

Operator . Our next comes from Dean of

Dean Adams . Are you in or are you still in Monaco? Where are you

Max Biaggi . Yeah, Monte

Dean Adams . Monte Okay. And Eleonora is going to the baby here very yes?

Max Biaggi . Yeah, one The baby is due on the 26th of December.

Adams . Ah, Christmas. So do you know you’re going to have? Boy? Just find

Max Biaggi . Maybe kind of the I’ll check it out. I find out soon. It’s to be something new.

Dean . Great, I think. Max, you mulled over resigning year, I think, because a bit of you is ready to get on with the rest of life, and do something other ride. Do you see yourself getting a real job when you are done

What are you going to do?

Max Biaggi . No; on. Don’t joke with me. A job when you’re over 40? I it’s too late. But during the I learned so many things in world, in the motorsport world, and of I re-signed a deal for two more that ends in 2012.

I find a way. Maybe have some opportunity to with Aprilia. The president to me about the future, and we have ideas. But let’s see, every day, every every month, something so nothing’s really for sure.

So I get through these two years day by day and see what’s going to happen.

Adams . No better evidence Max Biaggi has mellowed, than you asked someone else they thought, if you should racing or not. I can remember a when maybe that the case. But, Max, you much happier today you were, say, five or years ago.

Would you agree with

Max Biaggi . Yeah. It’s no to admit that, for sure. much more me now than eight years ago. I proved that I can fight with the big, strong but seven years ago, it was impossible to fight with the

When you have a giant you, not just because better than you, but he has much more than and it’s difficult to control Maybe it’s the same why Milandri moved to Superbikes. Who Ask him. But MotoGP is more up to the than to the rider’s ability, for sure.

And now, when I into World Superbike in I miss the World Championship by for a few points in the last races, but I still proved I was the man to fight for the Championship. But now the championship is much more complicated than

Operator . Our next question from Laurel Allen of Racer X.

Laurel Allen . You a high-corner-speed style that sort of really ideal for MotoGP bikes. Do you ever not getting the chance to ride an

Max Biaggi . Yeah. That is a question. 800cc seems it would really suit me if I was up but now I’m back in World But always at the end of the day when I check how you can be on an entire lap compared to another and you can make the difference all in the corner corner speed and entry on the So at the end of the day, it’s all about

And so, Superbike or MotoGP, for me it doesn’t much difference. It’s that, in Superbike, I’m than before.

Laurel . With MotoGP planning the to 1000s in 2012 and some of bikes expected to be production-based, do you the line between MotoGP and Superbike is becoming too blurred?

Max . Well, honestly, I think in two time, some production they can be built on MotoGP So maybe some teams, in World Superbike, will in MotoGP. I believe that. But is not up to me. The decision’s up to FIM and to the rules.

Until there’s one more year and I hope to focus on this and then we will see the year what it’s going to be.

Allen . Will you be spending any in California this winter?

Max . Yeah, yeah, of course. I come in December and January, but this year, or fortunately year, my girlfriend, she get a little in one month’s time, so she cannot We will spend the winter in Monaco.

I’ll come a few days before the Miller Park race, so in May.

Allen . Excellent. Well, on the baby also, and thank

Operator . I’m showing no questions at this time.

. All right. Well, we appreciate taking part in this And it’s been an awesome for Max and it’s been a good for Miller Motorsports Park.

And we forward to doing more of next year.

Max, like to wish you a happy and off-season. And happy holidays. And looking forward to seeing you here in Utah on May 28-30 for the USA of the Superbike World Championship.

Max . Yeah, thank you very Thanks for having me. And I can’t to get back to Miller Motorsports
