WSBK 2012, the Brno race

MAX BIAGGI GRITS HIS TEETH AT BRNO AND EARNS IMPORTANT POINTS IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

TWO GOOD PLACINGS FOR EUGENE LAVERTY WHO SUFFERED WITH GRIP PROBLEMS.

Brno, 22 July 2012 Two placings, coming back from the fourteenth spot on the starting grid, allowed Max Biaggi to hold onto the championship leadership. The Corsair now has a 21 point advantage over Melandri following his sixth and fourth place finishes on the Brno track.

Race 1 was marked by a start on a wet track, which dried off after the first few laps. In the middle phase of the race Max was one of the fastest on track, but the time lost at the beginning kept him from moving farther forward than his sixth place finish.

The second race, run completely in the dry, was the scene of a good start by Max which allowed him to catch up with the front riders. Biaggi moved into fourth place during the sixth lap and was able to hold onto it for the rest of the race and under the chequered flag.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t do any better than we did today said Max Biaggi right after the races We had some big problems with chattering which compromised every move I made. In Race 2 I tried not to lose touch with the front pack, but I just couldn’t maintain their pace. I was already at the limit as if it were the last lap. We still haven’t figured out what the problem is, since both the bike and the set-up are very similar to what we were using at Aragon.

I just hope that we don’t have the same problem in the rounds to come”.

After showing excellent pace during the test sessions, Eugene Laverty struggled more than expected for the races. The two fifth place finishes definitely don’t leave Eugene and his team happy after all their hard work this weekend.

“I’m not happy with these two fifth place finishes because we could have done much better. Unfortunately in Race 1 we chose the wrong tyre, and then in Race 2 we ran into grip problems that we had only had in the second qualifiers and Superpole 1. It’s a shame because we deserved more today. We’re taking home some important points, but definitely not as many as we had hoped for”.

ELIMINATION OF MAX BIAGGI IN SUPERPOLE 1 WILL FORCE HIM TO START FROM THE FOURTH ROW IN THE RACES TOMORROW.

EUGENE LAVERTY CONFIRMED HIS PERFORMANCE DURING THE TESTING SESSIONS WITH A THIRD PLACE TIME WHICH PLACES HIM ON THE FRONT ROW.

Brno, 21 July 2012 The Brno Superpole played a nasty trick on Max Biaggi and the Aprilia Racing Team. The Corsair will have to start from the fourth row tomorrow after being eliminated during the first session. The rivals, unlike Biaggi’s team, decided to go with a qualifying tyre straight away, putting times on the board which relegated Max to fourteenth place.

This is a situation which certainly does not leave the championship leader satisfied, who will be forced to make up the ground lost in Superpole during the races tomorrow. A lack of feeling on this track which has traditionally been favourable also contributes to expectations of an uphill battle in the races for Max Biaggi.

“The mistake today cost us quite a bit. We could definitely have started closer to the front if we had used a qualifying tyre straight away like the others. In any case we’ve struggled the whole weekend and that is very odd since we’ve always been fast here. Tomorrow will be hard.

Starting from the fourth row on a track that rides like this one is definitely not the best place to be”.

Eugene Laverty put in a good performance, finishing Superpole in third place. After coming through the first phase Eugene was one of the few to put a time on the boards before an interruption in Superpole 2 due to engine trouble with Giuliano’s bike which left fluids on the track. When everything was ready to restart a wet Superpole, consisting of a single 20 minute session, was called due to the uncertain weather conditions.

Eugene managed to use his second soft tyre well, earning him a spot on the front row of the starting grid for tomorrow.

“This has been a good weekend for us so far confirmed Eugene Laverty we’ve been fast from the first sessions, continuing the positive trend we started in Aragon. Tomorrow we can do well, although, like everyone else, we still have some doubts about tyre choices because of the poor grip on the track. Hopefully the temperature will go up a bit, but in any case we’re ready to give one hundred percent”.

AFTER A STRONG FOURTH TIME IN THE FREE PRACTICE SESSION, MAX BIAGGI ENCOUNTERS SOME DIFFICULTIES IN THE QUALIFIERS.

TWO GOOD FRIDAY SESSIONS FOR EUGENE LAVERTY AT BRNO, THIRD IN BOTH.

Brno, 20 July 2012 The shifting weather conditions at the Brno track, especially during the afternoon qualifying session, did not help ranking leader Max Biaggi. After putting a promising fourth time on the boards during free practice, Max encountered some difficulties in the set-up of his RSV4. This is an unusual situation considering the normally good feeling the Corsair has with the Czech circuit.

His fourteenth time in the qualifiers surprised even Max, who is confident in his Team’s work to realign the sights, specifically regarding the bike’s set-up. Tomorrow’s forecast for rain represents another unknown factor since the races on Sunday (barring any unforeseen events) should be on a dry track.

“We have a few problems to solve admitted Max Biaggi it almost feels like I’m riding on a different track and that’s odd because the bike has actually not been changed radically since the last race. We’re struggling coming into turns. We are really losing a lot of time coming out of them. Maybe we missed something in the tune up.

We’re analysing the data now and we’ll see about working to make up for lost ground”.

The double third place times Eugene Laverty made in the two sessions confirmed the Northern Irish rider’s good feelings after the Aragon races and tests. Fast even in less than perfect track conditions, Eugene says that he is satisfied with the work done today and he acknowledges that there is still a certain margin for improvement.

“This was a good day of testing for us, not only because of the third place times in both sessions. In fact, we know that we still need to improve on some things, so I’m confident about the rest of the weekend. Tomorrow we might be riding in the wet and then in the dry on Sunday, but honestly I’m not too worried about the weather conditions because we’ve got a good package either way”.

MAX BIAGGI ARRIVES AS RANKING LEADER AT BRNO, A CIRCUIT WHERE HE HAS TAKEN 11 CAREER VICTORIES.

THE ARAGON TESTS PROVIDED A CONFIDENCE BOOST FOR EUGENE LAVERTY, WHO FEELS READY FOR AN IMPORTANT RESULT.

Noale, 18 July 2012 Just two weeks after the fantastic Aragon races, World Superbike heads for the Czech Republic to take on the ninth round of the season. The Brno track will host the factory derivative bikes, with Aprilia Racing standard bearer Max Biaggi leading the rider standings and the Italian brand at the top of the manufacturer rankings.

Max’s relationship with the Czech circuit is auspicious: the Corsair has won 11 times at Brno, victories in every category he has ever raced in, which is a unique example of motorcycle racing domination. The current standings, which have him in the lead at a 48 point advantage over his nearest rival, as well as the Corsair’s excellent trend, coming off three wins in the last four races, provide further motivation to correct the statistics.

Max Biaggi is well aware of the importance of this round and he is preparing for a weekend where mistakes will be prohibited: “Arriving at Brno as ranking leader certainly adds pressure. This year, more than any other, we have battled and earned every result, against strong rivals and seasoned teams. The 11 wins I’ve taken here do not provide any certainties.

Even if this is a track where we have always been strong we cannot delude ourselves. The improvements our adversaries have made are quite clear. We will have to give it our all and make no mistakes”.

The podium at Aragon has restored confidence and motivation for Eugene Laverty after a few tarnished performances. The tests after the Spanish round allowed Eugene and his Team to continue developing the Aprilia RSV4, with encouraging results. The Northern Irish rider’s ambition for the Czech races is to battle for victory.

“A huge weight was lifted off my shoulders with the podium finish last time out in Aragon – said Eugene Laverty – I knew we were capable of finishing top three but after three very tough rounds I put pressure on myself to achieve that goal. The bike is working better than ever with big improvements made at the Monday test following the Aragon race weekend. My crew have done a fantastic job bringing the RSV4 back towards the top of the timesheets.

My goal next time out at Brno is a debut victory onboard the Aprilia where I expect Melandri, Rea and my teammate Max to be the toughest opposition”.
