Report: KTM India Track Day for 390 Duke Owners at Buddh International Circuit

KTM India organized a track day at the Buddh International Circuit at Greater Noida on 15th March, 2014 exclusively for 30 Duke Customers. More than 120 customers got the opportunity to ride at one of the best race tracks in the world. KTM 390 Duke is one of the hottest selling motorcycles in the mid-size segment owing to its excellent performance and handling capabilities.

The track day held at the BIC and was the first ever for KTM India but it was also the first time a two-wheeler manufacturer in India had organized something like this for their customers. With so many manufacturers selling powerful motorcycles in the country, it was about time someone took the initiative to do this! Yours’ truly from was there to cover the event and it was an absolute joy to be there and experience the KTM 390 Duke like never before.

The main track is 5.141km long but for this track event KTM used the shorter loop (the circuit has two shorter loops of which the first was put into use). The circuit has 16 turns and the first short loop takes you through T1 (Turn 1) T2, T3 through the main straight of more than 1km to T4 and then there’s a sharp U-turn at T5 which puts you at T16 again back on the start/finish line. You can see the picture below to get an idea of the shorter loop at BIC.

There were two slaloms made using cones, one was at the entry to T1 and the other at the end of the main straight just before T4.

For most riders this was sufficient as they were able to put in 7-9 laps depending on their pace in the 15 minute sessions that was conducted. But the more experienced riders, experts and even the customers towards the end of the day felt that the full length of the track would have been a lot more fun to ride-on owing to the larger number of twisty sections available to put this precisely engineered motorcycle through its paces.

Each batch of riders went on the track led by an expert rider at the front. They were instructed on riding techniques and briefed prior and after the ride on riding at the BIC and how to go as fast as possible yet ride safely. There were a few crashes as few riders found it difficult to negotiate the tight curves of T5 coming into T16 as there were elevation changes that made it difficult for new riders to judge.

However, not a single rider was injured as everyone walked away without any injuries owing to the strict adherence to riding gear imposed by the race track and KTM India on the participants.  The bikes were fitted with transponders and customers were able to get their lap times. And everyone got a certificate for participation at the end of the day.

KTM India also had a service bay open for customers where they serviced and tweaked the customer motorcycles for the race track. Customers were able to get an engine oil change and there was a range of products from Motul that was being used on the motorcycles. Motul was also a major sponsor to this event which was a grand success and very well organized.

KTM India had tied up with Northern Motorsports for organizing the track day and there were several marshals on the field to assist riders and help by providing first aid in the event of a crash. The safety car was always around to ensure everyone had a safe run on one of the best racing arena in the world. There was also a fully equipped Ambulance and medical team on stand-by.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Amit Nandi (Vice President- Bajaj Probiking) said “KTM comes from a rich history of racing and this reflects on every KTM motorcycle made. Such events are an opportunity for the customers to realize the true potential of their KTM’s in a regulated environment and under expert guidance. We will continue to host such unique Customer Sport events for our customers.”

KTM India has plans of coming back to the Buddh International Circuit in the near future for another round of track riding for KTM 390 owners. With the RC200 and RC390 plans firmed up for the coming Financial Year, we can be certain that many such events will be held at the BIC by KTM India in the offing. also suggested that the RC390 launch should be held at the BIC or at the other two race tracks in India where media can have a go at the bike at a race track, which is only apt for testing the motorcycle built for the race tracks.

We also probed KTM to find out if they have any plans of a One Make Race similar to what Yamaha and Honda are doing in India. KTM said that it has no such plans at present but we came to understand from their dedication to providing a fantastic ownership and riding experience, it may very well be a possibility in the future. KTM India is a motorcycle brand that is out there catering to the needs of the customers and for KTM owners its a great opportunity to test their machines on a race track.

Before we conclude, you may be wondering what the cost of this track day was? Customers were charged a ₹500 refundable security deposit and that’s about it! A race track where private track days cost upwards of ₹15,000 KTM 390 Duke owners got themselves a free chance to ride!

They could even fill up their tanks at the track but of course Petrol is something worth paying for, is it not?
