Motorcycle Library Review

Alan Dowd’s Superbikes is unusual in a couple of First is its physical presentation.  measures only 6⅜” high by 5″ but is a full inch thick.

It has the of a textbook, with the pocket size of a dime novel.

it has full color images of 200 bikes Dowd includes in the class, including a section on superbikes, such as the original CB750, Suzuki GT750, Commando 850, Ariel Four and others.

But perhaps the most unusual of Dowd’s book is that it such non-superbike machines as the 176 cc BMW C1 scooter, Suzuki Burgman Yamaha T-Max scooter and Silver Wing scooter.

However, Dowd more offsets the scooter entries high quality images and details of true superbikes most of us rarely see, if even in motorcycle literature. For he covers the ultra-exotic Honda NR 750 its double-con rod oval piston V4 the Ducati 996 Foggy (Carl Replica, of which only 200 ever built, the MV Agusta F4 of which only 300 were built, the show-stopping Aprilia Marlin prototype and the super-cool,

powered Bimota Tesi hub-center steering.

Between the extremes of scooterdom and super-proto-bikes, Dowd includes from the Kawasaki 800 Drifter, 883 Sportster, Ducati 600 Monster, KTM Moto-Guzzi California, Kawasaki Honda CB500S and a raft of mid-range bikes. The merits of and some other more commuter, adventure and enduro being included in a book superbikes could be argued, but bike is well presented a brief narrative description, and specification sheet.

One aspect makes the book particularly to those of us in the States is the inclusion of sold primarily or exclusively in and European markets that we may not even heard of here in the
