Aprilia SL 1000 Falco test

Intro: HALF-ANGEL-HALF DEMON

Introduced onto the market in 2000- the SL 1000 Falco is distinguished by its character of being a touring bike but also a sport bike. Capable of a docile acceleration- re-assuring and comfortable- it can equally serve the sporting needs of its rider and attack as long as one accepts its usage.

Esthetique: PURE APRILLA

The finish of the Aprilla SL 1000 Falco is not its strong point. The block counter is not well finished- but is functional if you take a lesson. The commands are kept at a strict minimum to the point where we can confuse the control for the turning signals with the horn.

However- the lines are successful. The block with three optics are efficient- they offer an aggressive style notably thanks to the enormous air intake. At the back the aesthetics are particularly well taken care of and original. A futuristic design that we find also on the other models of the mark.

Finally- the passenger seat has a small trunk that either you can store rain gear or an anti-theft system- but not both.

Motorization: THE CHAMELEON

The SL 1000 Falco is doted with a bi-cylinder from the RSV 1000. Which develops104 horsepower at 9250 rpm and a maximum torque of 9.1 mkg at 7000 rpm. Atypical in regards to the competition- its motor surprises by its large rev range- which boosts up excessively reports for this type of motor.

But it’s thanks to it that the vocation of the Falco takes all of this in because it allows for either a sporty or touring mode depending on the mood of the rider. Lovers of touring should stay under the 8000-rpm mark to benefit from the docility of the motor a little bit hollow at mid-range and the more enthusiastic can open up the motor to exploit its potential. In fact- you do not have to hesitate to climb through the gearbox to find the necessary power.

The grip in hand can be sometimes difficult for those used to the twin sporting. And more- the Pneumatic power Clutch system permits compensation in down shifting too aggressively and to avoid blocking the rear wheel.

On the road: AGILE AND VERSATILE

First report- the urban routes are not the vocation of the Aprilla. The riding position is also not very radical- like those of sport bikes but stay too tipped over on the front.

Since- once on the open road- the quality of protection and comfort of the seat and the suspension becomes very agreeable. The windjammer is high and well thought out- assuring a good protection.

On roads more tight- twisty and bumpy- the 1000 Falco surprise with its agility. The turn in is easy and the holding to the road is relatively sane. So- no bad surprises- the suspension absorbs without difficulty the incidental surface defects.

We note since that the front end becomes a bit light in the case of heavy acceleration. So beware at the amount of gas you wind up on the exit of a corner. So much that the suspension adopted from the origin is a little soft.

Finally- the brakes by Brembo are redoubtable but reassuring. The front- the double discs four-piston callipers assure a progressiveness that never takes the rider by surprise.
