With sales exceeding expectations in Bajaj–known for decades as a a world-leading company–doesn’t list a single on their website. For a year, has been selling of remaining of their unpopular Wave and of their dominance of the second- and motorcycle market. Stuck a product in a growing (or at least stable) market, Bajaj reluctant to admit their error, even as they to release new scooters.

The first new effort, the Kristal debuts in February. At 95cc, targeted towards teenagers and women, which seems of old-fashioned even by Indian and standards. Dave McCabe of and American Scooterist just from India, and some plant tours, and reports:

The is kind of a disappointment. It’s than the [Indian Honda] It has all sorts of funky angularity into the design (crystal-like?) The has lots of gadgets added to it, an storage light, light-sensitive for turning on the headlight at night. the ignition key one way and it pops open a gas

In India, at 16 you can ride an “ungeared” under 100cc. You need to be 18 to a geared scooter. The wimpy capacity is targetted for this

The engineers who gave me the tour me that the Krystal’s engine was an new design from the Wave. It the Wave’s dual spark and the “exhaust tech” (I know, names.) I understand the point of the spark but I had to have an engineer the point of the exhaust system. basically a little box off the main of the exhaust pipe.

At low rpms, the little box (ahead of the cat help reduces back on the engine. It’s more” low than “exhaust tech” but it works.

Bajaj was pretty coy about why stopped production of the Wave. It had to do with the starter motors, but I think that it had other flaws. It was evident that were being super-careful the rollout of the Krystal. Dealers getting limited numbers to for bugs and there were stages of quality control in the production. All of the engine cases pressure tested.

If the cases hold pressure they pulled from the line. The was found using the old “soapy method, then repaired. All were also bench before being put in bodies. The test was interesting, they had a set up so they could check the engine would run on both plugs or either plug. At the end of the line, all of the scooters were tested as well.

It’s pretty clear want rock solid going out before they up into full production.
