I really like this scooter, and the price is good — $3200 new out the door for the 2006 model. I think the shifting would be fun, but my wife is not so sure. However she does admit that the handle bar shifting looks easy. For beginning riders, do you think the shifting would be too much to deal with? or too much of a distraction to enjoy the ride or to be safe?

Also, is it a comfortable ride for a passenger? I know these things are subjective, but I’d still like to hear opinions.

I find the stock seat on these to be uncomfortable for long rides, but there are many P series options that will fit. I’m not sure how long of rides you want to go on with a passenger, so it might be fine, or you may need to swap out the seat. If you can drive a manual shift car, you can ride a manual shift bike.

It does take a little practice, but it is fun. I never found it to be in any way distracting.

People 150:

I really like this scooter too. My wife is scared of the exhaust pipe cover burning her leg if she’s the passenger. How hot does the exhaust cover get?

Also, is it a comfortable ride for a passenger? She doesn’t like the pop-out foot pegs, because she’s afraid that they wouldn’t stay in place and she would lose her footing. How likely is that?

The pegs seem to stay in place. I put about 700 miles on one last weekend. They are pretty comfortable for a rider and passenger. In the interests of not being fatigued, I ended up putting my feet on the passenger pegs to change position several times.

They didn’t move around. The exhaust thing, I’m not sure whether that is really in the way of a passenger.

Fly 150:

This is the one my wife wants. Actually she really wants the Vespa LX150, but there’s no way I’ll go for that, at $5k, unless we found a good deal on a used one. The Austin Vespa dealer doesn’t allow test drives, which makes me nervous, and the Fly 150 would be $4000 out the door, which is the highest priced of all the scooters we’re looking at.

The wife thinks the passenger seat is very comfortable. How foolish would it be to buy this one without a test drive?

I haven’t had the chance to ride one yet. So I can’t tell you that much about it. My question here is do you have a motorcycle license?

Many dealers are reluctant to give test rides to unlicensed riders. You wouldn’t go to a Lexus dealer and ask them to let you take a car out if you didn’t have a drivers license. The MSF course is a good way to get licensed before buying a bike. I would have a very hard time spending that kind of money on a scooter that I couldn’t ride first.

Or that I couldn’t bring back if I was not pleased.

Buddy 125:

I’ve heard a lot of good things about it, but haven’t seen it in person yet. Is the seat big enough to fit 2 people? How does its speed and pep compare to 150cc scooters?

The closest Genuine dealer that I know of is about an hour and a half away, in San Antonio, so this one would really have to stand out above the others for us to get it.

The Buddy is really the big surprise of 2006. It’s very peppy. The acceleration is grin inducing and it has a better top speed than expected. A quart of fun crammed into a pint size.

I’m not sure it’s a great 2-up scooter. I didn’t get the chance to ride with a passenger. I’m 6’0 and 200lb. I think I would have to have a very petite passenger to fit comfortably on the seat with me. The scooter does not have as much load capacity as the others you mention.

So both of you would need to be on the smaller side to ride on it comfortably and without overloading it.

Then again, the price on them is just a little more than half of what it would cost to buy the LX150 from Vespa Austin. So if you both liked them perhaps you could get a his and hers. I like having a passenger aboard, but I have more fun when it’s one person to a scooter.
