Sex and the City Bikes | Naked in New York

Pausing at Supermoto Italia, we picked up shop owner Super Joe Tortora, Monster owner Sean Behun and two even more exotic naked bikes: a metallic-gold Benelli TNT Caf Racer and an azure-blue Bimota DB6 Delirio. While the Caf Racer is stunning, the Delirio makes grown men drool like Carrie on Sex and the City did over Manolo Blahnik pumps (or like we did when she wore them, for that matter).

As we filled up with premium unleaded, an attendant marveled at the Bimota’s exquisite tubular swingarm and frame welds, which look like something from a New York University art exhibit. Meanwhile, the Benelli’s zig-zagging bodywork, triangular exhausts and wicked, side-mounted radiators appear to have been transported back from the future. For all its freshness and revolutionary design, however, the Caf Racer’s low clip-ons and nose-down, stubby-tail stance (and hefty 432-pound dry weight) reveal a DNA link to genuine caf racers from the ’60s.

It rides even better than it looks, Tortora promised, so off we went in search of roads capable of proving his theory. Unfortunately, clear roads are harder to find on Long Island than cheap real estate. As we rolled along tree-lined suburban streets, the ambient heat caused the riders to fan themselves desperately at each too-long stoplight. To their credit, not a single motorcycle overheated, though at times I was about to.

The Bimota, despite being the most expensive of the bunch, never revealed how hot it was running because its instruments packed up and refused to provide so much as name, rank and serial number.

In time, the traffic grew worse. Each time we spotted a break in the cars, a phalanx of SUVs cut across our path. If this kept up much longer, I was gonna have to strip out of my leathers and brave one of these Buttafuoco bars for a cold one. The stop-and-go riding did, however, give us a chance to appreciate each bike’s details and in-town manners. Three of the four sport massive Brembo Monobloc front brake calipers, which are more than enough for any street rider’s needs.

The Benelli makes do with non-radial Brembos, which still offer solid speed-cutting prowess. In these conditions, the $16,000 TNT Caf Racer is both brilliant and brutal. Its clutch, brakes and suspension work well at low speeds, though the 3-into-1 underseat exhaust threatens to deliver an order of sweet and sour roasted plums to the rider at every opportunity. The 1130cc triple is mechanically noisy but offers enough charge under 4000 rpm that powering from gap to gap in traffic is a buzz.

The Benelli also won the award for Most Stared At, hands-down.

The Bimota is no slouch in the wow department, either, as the wasp-waisted machine shares the same minuscule dimensions and quick-revving, great-at-low-speed 1100 DS motor as the Ducati Hypermotard. It’s so light and balanced, it feels like either a giant dirtbike or a high-end supermoto, noted former motocross racer Sean. The only problem is I’m afraid to drop a bike that costs more than most cars.

At $29,400, the Delirio is far from cheap. But when the roads finally, gloriously opened up, I was hyped by its throbbing V-twin engine, as playful and eager as a Labrador retriever pup that’s spent all day cooped up in an apartment. You could rock an even worse comb-over than The Donald and this ride would still get you a hook-up in NYC.

When we reached Long Island’s most popular sportbike backroad-a long, undulating stretch of sweepers-the Bimota felt so light and nimble, I couldn’t help cornering foot-down like a supermoto racer. But then the cost of this little blue devil creeps back into my conscious and I realize I’d be more comfortable on something a bit more pedestrian.
