Benelli’s Brutal Eye Candy

DOES beauty have a in the world of motorcycles? If you answer then Benelli has completely the point with the 1130 TnT is, by any standards, one of the ugliest motorcycles produced.

You get the impression that a designer took a random of tubes and angles and experienced a psychotic event.

But is that so

This motorcycle generates its own everywhere I rode people and stared at it.

They all agreed it was but almost all of them liked it and is intelligent styling.

The hardware

difficult, writing about a which keeps on throwing into your head. I can see the red sinuous swingarm and the flowing of the innovative frame as it winds its way from the steering head to be into the swingarm pivot by that unique system of massive screws. I can see the sharp of covers and mirrors and indicators I should be writing about the of cylinders in the engine.

The truth is that the Tornado tricks on you, overwhelming senses with its styling you try to focus on the engineering. In a lesser this would be a less-than-ethical way of you to faults but that is most not the case here.

The Benelli is not but the issues I had with it came to a key which occasionally took more persuasion than I is necessary to get inserted into the lock. The other issue was I have a Tornado in my shed. At the key is a folding on e which doesn’t up your pockets so that’s a The shed issue is regrettably not so resolved.

Put simply, describing the appearance does it no justice, you to see it to appreciate the full force of the styling.

The power unit is a triple with all of the best of that configuration. At 1130cc it is a big and it has been tuned for mid-range rather than top-end and in a bike that’s got to be a recipe for a ride. The gearbox is a cassette-style and it swaps cogs superbly.

Chassis components of high abound on the Tornado. The brakes are by and are fine examples of the performance you when that name is suspension is by Marzocchi USD forks up and an Extreme Technology shock at the

The Ride

Sitting on the TnT gives the impression that everything is too far – the instrument pod sits low down the tiny beak-like nose and the bars sit up high – but the impression last. As soon as you ride it, the lets you know that will be a riding experience to Triples growl and the TnT does it a rather high-pitched note seems to add to the sense of urgency and you want to play tunes the throttle as you ride along.

In our tests of Benelli triples I less than favourably on the response and the lack of overall of the EFI; that’s now in the past and the bike still works if you have a delicate touch on the (read: take lots of if you’re ham-fisted!) riding it thick traffic is no longer the activity it could be on earlier Nevertheless there are still hundred and thirty ccs down and they’re all tuned for grunt so to life easier in traffic the have thoughtfully included an device called the Power

This little tool discretely on the left of the instrument pod and used takes the edge off the delivery so you can ride easy in then button back to power when you need it. puts it a little differently: the light is ‘on’ you have the full 137bhp (101kW) at throttle hand and when ‘off’ you only get 112hp with a benefit to fuel of 10 to 20%.

That’s all good and also tell you that excellent for traction control in conditions. And while we’re on the of power, it’s there in tyre-shredding, wheelie-popping amounts.

Thumb the button, hear the and instantly the grin comes on the but pick your locations the TnT positively demands to be ridden a hooligan and there are certain in this world who take a dim of such enjoyments. I found riding not too much of a chore the windsock effect not becoming a issue until well ‘go to gaol’ speeds – the nose might look like a appendage but it actually works effectively.

In the bends the bike is superb to ride because it has all the you need for attacking the twisties: power (and heaps of to rocket you from corner to excellent ground clearance, brakes with loads of and feel, precise and neutral which held any line you but would alter at the slightest from the wide bars. It all up to bliss in the bendy bits.

The is especially good with the falling straight down to the angle you select and then there almost without rider input, yet with response to that input it came. One of the regrets I have the test was that I had no opportunity to the Benelli to a track – if it was that fun on the road, it would be wonderfully on the track!

The only fault I could with the ride came the footpegs: they are rubber-coated but the are finished with little ball-ends which stick up than the rubber section. As a your boots can slip on the and when you’re cornering in a that can be disconcerting. If it was my bike I’d be a file to the balls and giving a good roughing and rasping.

the better roads in NSW (yes I where some still the Benelli’s road manners and were superb and travel was over the lunar landscape calls itself secondary the ride is very much on the side and the suspension’s focus is on the road without regard to comfort. There is enough at both front and rear to the compromise more to the comfort end but don’t expect a tourer’s – you’ll be disappointed.

The last word

The only stopping you from buying bike is your ego: can you the attention? Everywhere you go they’ll and stare but not at you, they’ll have eyes for the bike. be incidental, an ornament to a motorcycle.

If you can it your world will be with the TnT between your
