Bimota and Benelli back in Australia

The two Italian manufacturers have found a new suitor in Australia, with Benelli’s range-topping 1130cc TNT R160 triple to sell for $20K

A Melbourne-based company – which already owns three dealerships catering for scooter and entry-level riders – has provided an Australian lifeline to Italian motorcycle marques Benelli and Bimota, and plans to utilise a unique, price-competitive made-to-order business model to meet its low-volume, niche requirements.

Instead of developing — and nurturing — a traditional dealer-based structure, potential Benelli and Bimota customers will be flown to Melbourne by Urban Moto Imports, based in the inner suburb of Brunswick, to inspect and/or test ride a particular model.

If the chemistry is right, customers can then make a bespoke order and the bike will be delivered, via air freight, no longer than six weeks later. And they’ll also get a plane ticket home – but for those who decide not to purchase, they will have to fund their own way back to base.

Urban Moto Imports principal Joe Elasmar told the Bikesales Network the entire Benelli range will be available to Australian customers, with the flagship TNT R160 selling for $19,990 (plus on-road costs).

“That bike in a traditional dealership would sell for about $26K,” said Elasmar. “But because of our business model, we can sell it for a lot less, while still providing a quality service.”

The TNT R160 is all about maximum speed with minimum resistance, and uses the same 1131cc in-line triple as found in the limed-edition Titanium model, and claims 158hp (116kW) at 10,200 – hence the ‘160’ moniker. Well, it’s close enough.

Torque is 120Nm at 8400rpm, and other top-shelf componentry includes a Brembo monoblock caliper/wave disco combo set, a 50mm Marzocchi fork, Sachs shock, and slipper (dry) clutch. Kerb weight is 215kg.

Other Benelli models include the Century Racer (in 889 and 1130 configurations), Café Racer (889 and 1130), Tre (889 and 1130) and Tre 1130K Amazonas.

Full pricing is still being finalised, but also expect to pay less than $16K for the Century 889 Racer.

As far as Bimota is concerned, sports bike nuts will be rubbing their hands together at the thought of getting their mitts on a Ducati 1198-powered DB8, with the DB6 also a possibility down the track.

Customers based in states outside Victoria will be looked after by ‘service dealers’, which will complete the initial handover and then continue as the points of contact for servicing and warranty matters.

Benelli, a division of the massive Chinese Qianjiang Group but still headquartered in Pesaro, Italy, is now a split operation in Australia, with the NSW-based Motorsport Importers continuing to be the scooter distributor, while Urban Moto Imports takes the motorcycle baton.
