Classic: BENELLI 750 SEI

An exotic six inspired by a successful Japanese Seemed like a good at the time. How did it turn out? Ian of Motorcycle Trader magazine the story.

Ever since Hailwood intoxicated the world on the ear-splitting, Honda RC166 and 174 in and 1967, the six-cylinder motorcycle has held in hallowed reverence. And Honda stole the limelight the six-cylinder CBX in the late 1970s, in Benelli unveiled the 750 Sei, the production six-cylinder motorcycle.

Argentinean entrepreneur Alejandro De bought Benelli in 1971 he creating a high performance sporting motorcycle in the mould of his De Pantera car. This was the era of the Superbike, from the Honda 750 and Z1 fours, to the BMW and Ducati twins, and the and quickest, way for De Tomaso to enter the battleground was by copying someone As a fan of the Japanese motorcycle industry, De looked no further than the 500 Four, already acknowledged as one of the motorcycles then in production.

Making no apology for using the CB500F as a basis, the Benelli 750 Sei was a Honda 500 four with two cylinders. Even the bore and of 56 x 50.6mm was identical, as were the single overhead camshaft two-piece con-rods with big-ends, and Hy-Vo chain drive.

Where the Benelli differed the Honda was in its use of three Dell’Orto VHB carburettors, and to minimise engine the electric start and alternator mounted behind the cylinders. The was in a moderate state of tune, only 71 horsepower at 8,500rpm, but was smooth, with a beautiful emitting from the six individual that only the Italians manage to achieve.

In this era powerful Japanese engines outperformed the chassis, the Benelli Sei to combine Japanese-like horsepower European handling. Top quality components included Brembo Marzocchi suspension, and Borrani alloy wheels. And despite the wide engine the 219kg Sei was a fine handling machine in the Italian tradition.

The only problem was it was expensive, and not fast; definitely more of a tourer than Superbike. road tests managed a top of around 190km/h, and on paper the didn’t seem to offer than a Honda 750 Four.

the Sei, De Tomaso tried to overcome many of the problems with Italian motorcycles of the 1970s. Not content with electrics and unreliable instruments, he the Sei with a proper instrument complete with a full set of lights.
