Benelli 500 LS

The Honda of this test has been imported from Italy with less than 20.000 km on the clock. Only a hard cleaning sesion and all original components look like new. The engine needed an oil filter change, new spark plugs and a good carbs cleaning. Once on the road, the bike run in very good condition.

The Benelli was found abandoned in a garage with 22.000 km in the clock. The previous owner has had some problems with the batterie charge and decided to sell it. 8 years later the machine was still there and I bougth it for 600 Euros.

The only charge problem was a hearth disconected wire. A new batterie, new oil, spark plugs and a serious carbs cleaning and the bike was again on the road.

The coulour was not original in the Benelli but was in good condition, as the rest of plastic and chrome components. In general the Benelli was in not as good condition as the Honda, due to the poor quality used in the components of the italian bike.

To be honest, this test must be realised between the Benelli 500 Quattro (1974) and the Honda 500 Four (1972), but the Benelli 500 LS (1976) itґs a more logical option than the Quattro.

A new smaller frame adapted to the four cylinders engine, reduced the final dimensions of the bike. Only few changes were needed in the engine to get it reliable and a new cosmetic touch made the new bike looking much lighter an smaller than the Quattro model.

The ignition key itґs under the fuel tank on the Honda and you can fire the engine with a kick or the electric start. No matter on the Benelli, only electric start with the ignition key between the clocks.

The engine sound itґs similar throught the four pipes in both bikes, but the Benelli has aftermarket spanish “Ixil” silencers, less restrictives than the original items fitted in the Honda. Over 6.000 rpm the Benelli sing a lovely racing music.

The controls are similar in both bikes, with more or less the same information, but in the Honda are generally a best design and a easy handling. The cluch lever has similar touch but the front twin Brembo brakes are superior to the single woody touch on the Honda. The Keihin carbs linking are softer to twist than the Dellґortos ones, with stronger springs and are very sensibles to be dereglated.

On the road both bikes run smoothly, with good ground clearence and general confort. The Honda has an smaller fuel tank capacity and a 19” front whell instead the 18” in the Benelli. The riding position itґs more relaxed an ergonomical in the Honda, giving the rider weihgt to the front wheel .

The long fuel tank in the Benelli generate a riding position placed backward, more efective when running fast. The original hight handlebar fovorise the optimun control of the bike.

The gear ratios are longer in the Honda, favouriting better acelerations and a top speed under good conditions. In practice, the Benelli feels rageous and faster at any speed. The engine breath better with italianґs carbs and the spanish megaphones.

Faster we run better the Benelli feels, showing his superior frame, 18” front wheel, better brakes and good suspensions and only reaching the limits in local roads the Honda canґt follow the italian. But this is not their logical use. In general the Benelli feels ligther and smaller than the Honda and has not the “classic charisma” of the japanese bike.

The italian engine is quite realiable but no at the same level than the japanese one. The quality of the tools and the controls used in the italian factory are too far of the japanese techonology. The best itґs fitting a Honda engine into a Benelli rolling frame, a very easy job because both crankcases have the same points of fixation.

The French breakers have sold a lot of Honda engines for reparing or replacing italian engines. In fact, only few parts can be interchanged into both engines. So it was cheaper a full second hand Honda engine than reparing the original italian engine with original parts.

Why tu look for a Benelli 500 LS, instead a Honda 500 Four. Itґs not an easy question, mainly when you can get hundreds of Honda at a reasonably price, but very few Benelli out there. Only the purist or the exigent can get a good response for.

If you have a Benelli in your garage itґs very posible you want a Honda CB500Four too. But if your bike itґs a Honda now, it could be very dificult youґll need a Benelli. But what about for racing? Oh, yes!

This is another matter. An hybrid itґs flying over my mine. An italian good frame engined with a TUUUNNEED! Four Honda with four curveb megaphones (Swarbrick Racing please!), rear Koni shocks, Tarozzi foot rear set, Tomasselli clips-on and the old Pasolini greygreen paintwork factory coulour and the result could be “benellisimo”.

Itґs your time for dreaming now.
