1972 Benelli 250 SuperSport 5 speed

After restoration


The history of this Benelli 250 SuperSport dates to the early 50’s in Pesaro, Giuseppe Benelli, the oldest of the six brothers, set off to start a new motorcycle with his sons Luigi and Some of the explanations given for move were that was; possibly distraught at the that the German forces on the Benelli factory, in disagreement his brothers or just lured in by the of an expanding market.

In 1962 the two companies merged into one. The Benelli now had a very large line of that included the horizontally Motobi design. The engine was pushed out to 175cc. A few of the production offered during this went under the names of Imperial Sport 125, 175 and Catria Sport 175 with the models featuring clip-on and bump-stop saddles.

Then came a 200cc a bore and … of 66mm x This was followed in 1966 by a 250cc with bore and of 74mm x 57mm and was further in 1968 when a five-speed was added. In the United States, bikes were marketed as losing their Motobi and falling under the names of and Barracuda.

These motorcycles do retain the Motobi insignia cast the engine cases.

The bike was the next progression of the design. In the States it was called the Benelli and in Europe the Motobi SportSpecial. The was hopped up slightly in accord what many had been to the Sprites and Barracudas, the noted being a hotter cam.

SuperSport was acquired by the Digital in December, 1993. It represents a finished, full restoration. of the elements that went this restoration are: frame and swingarm, seat to original (including Benelli across back), repaint and digitize and manufacture tank engine top-end rebuild, spokes and Borranis, and straightening of and dented stainless fenders.

The most difficult obstacle was the exhaust system which was off two inches from the engine These header pipes are no available (to my knowledge). After a complete header pipe to a copy had to be constructed and chromed.

There are only a few minor still missing that this bike static.
