BMW unveils specs of 2011 R1200R motorcycle

Monday, November 1, 2010, 19:01 by Auto Correspondent

BMW has revealed the details of the R1200R naked roadster. The German automaker offers a standard R1200R and R1200R Classic in its 2011 line up.

BMW will showcase the two motorcycles at the EICMA show this week. BMW will also present the G650GS motorcycle at the EICMA show in Milan.

In terms of technology, both the standard R1200R and the Classic R1200R share a common engine. The new 2011 BMW R1200R motorcycles will be powered by an upgraded boxer engine. The boxer engine is also popular in BMW’s best-selling GS line of motorcycles. The boxer engine has been developed from the one used on the HP2 Sport.

The upgraded boxer engine is actually a 1170 cc horizontally-opposed flat twin that makes use of a dual overhead cam in each cylinder head. BMW has made the intake and exhaust valves larger, with the valves in radial arrangement. The refurbished engine has a higher rev limit (8,500 rpm as against the previous 8,000 rpm) and now makes a healthy 110 bhp of power at 6,000 rpm and 88 lb ft of peak torque at 7,750 rpm.

There is no information yet on the price of the motorcycle.

BMW has retained most of the styling and features of the previous model in the upcoming R1200R. The new R1200R features telelever and paralever suspension, just as it is on their other boxer-engined bikes. It also has electronic suspension adjustment, integrated ABS and automatic stability control as optional features.

The cockpit is redesigned, featuring analog instruments, quite typical of roadsters. The speedometer and tachometer sit in a classic arrangement of side-by-side placement and gives the ride all information at a glance. The instruments feature orange backlighting.

Adding to this, a display presents useful details like the current gear and the time. On request, the functions of the instrument panel can be expanded with an onboard computer that provides further information, e.g. range, average consumption, and outside temperature. Hydraulic reservoirs come with a smoked glass look.

BMW offers additional equipment and tailored accessories.

The new BMW R1200R models are based on the proven two part frame structure that integrates the engine as a supporting element. The steering head angle and castor are tuned to the handling and stability that a roadster needs for dynamic riding. The rear, weight-optimized section of the tubular space frame contributes to its lightweight appearance.

In order to visually distinguish between the R1200R standard and R1200R Classic, BMW has made many changes to suit the bikes’ name and characteristics.

The R1200R is base version comes in matte metallic smoky grey, metallic light grey, or metallic red apple. These three color variants when combined with the wheels and drivetrain in Nürburg silver give the roadster a sport and dynamic feel.

The R1200R Classic has some classic design elements such as wire-spoked wheels, chrome plated exhaust and mirrors. Even the boxer engine gets silver treatment in the Classic version, making it stand apart from the regular R1200R, besides a stainless steel silencer.

The front suspension of the BMW R1200R uses the telelever design in conjunction with a new fork structure. The diameter of the standpipe has been enlarged (from 35 to 41 mm) and contributes to shaping the face of the new R1200R. The rear suspension takes the form of the tried and tested single arm BMW paralever.

The front brake discs have a diameter of 320 mm and the rear brake discs 265 mm. BMW Motorrad integral ABS is optional.
