E46 M3 Competition Package

The E46 M3 Package, known by the internal ZCP, was initially offered in of 2004 as an exclusive option for the American market. It was then to other markets beginning September 2005 production. only on the M3 coupe, the option consisted of the following equipment of which is derived from of the limited-production M3 CSL):

Cross-drilled brake rotors to 13.7 inches in front) two-piece compound rotors hat and outer portion connected by pins)

Steering ratio to 14.5:1

M Track Mode for Dynamic Stability Control does not eliminate—the threshold at the DSC intervenes)

19-inch cross-spoke wheels (8×19-inch front, rear)

Alcantara-wrapped M three-spoke wheel with M Track activation button (audio and control buttons deleted)

aluminum interior trim milled effect

Exclusive Blue metallic (A30) option

E46 M3 CS

The right-hand drive of the E46 M3 coupe with the Competition sold in the United Kingdom was given the M3 CS designation. However, model does not contain M3 CS of any kind, nor does it differ its left-hand drive ZCP counterpart in any way.

Production numbers of the M3 CS

BMW has not disclosed how many examples of the M3 Competition Package (ZCP)/M3 CS produced.

The S54 engine in the E46 M3 is the ultimate and final evolution of the S50 inline-6 that powered the versions of the E36 M3. Though derived the 3.2-liter S50 B32 unit, the S54 features the enhancements:

Increased cylinder to 87mm (from 86.1mm) for a new displacement of 3,246cc

High pressure Double continuously variable valve system with faster at high rpm

Increased compression to 11.5:1 11.3:1)

Advanced BMW/Siemens MSS 54 management control

Electronic activation with two M Dynamic Control response modes

rocker arms for reduced mass and friction

One-piece head casting for lighter

Scavenging oil pump to maintain during heavy cornering

The S54 in the E46 M3 is rated at 343 hp (DIN) or 333 hp (SAE) at rpm and 262 lb/ft of torque at 4,900

The E46 M3 utilizes a Getrag D six-speed manual gearbox the following ratios: 4.23 2.53 (2), 1.67 1.23 (4), 1.00 0.83 (6). This is to a 3.62:1 final drive M Variable Differential Lock. with 09/01 production, the E46 M3 was offered with the second-generation M Gearbox (SMG II).

the unaltered internal gears and of the Getrag Type D manual SMG II provides automatic operation of the and engagement of each gear via an system operated by Drivelogic, the gearbox software. SMG II offers 11 programs, six in sequential (driver-operated) and five in automated (computer-controlled) In addition, there is also a Control function that optimized shifting times for acceleration.

The E46 M3 features Electronic Control

The E46 M3 is equipped with a version of Dynamic Stability (DSC) developed by Teves for the E46 M3. It can reduce power and/or each wheel individually to maintain traction and control The DSC can also be disabled completely via a switch.

In addition, the M3 CSL and the M3 ZCP/CS models are equipped with M Track a switchable setting that for some oversteer and wheelspin by the threshold at which the DSC intervenes.

M Lock

The M Differential Lock, as standard equipment to every E46 M3, is an version of the traditional limited differnetial. Though still mechanical in operation, the M Differential is activated when there is a in rotational speed between the two wheels. This difference a viscous silicon fluid, then operates a multi-disc that directs more to the wheel with the greatest

North American E46 M3 vs. European-spec

Unlike the E36 M3, which was equipped a unique engine configuration for America, all E46 M3s sold worldwide are by the same S54 powerplant and only mechanically in minor ways. The significant difference is that the are located slightly closer to the block on North American-spec thus increasing their to quickly heat up and therefore cold-start emissions. This for the slight reduction in peak (approximately 5 hp when compared comparable ratings standards).

The E46 M3 utilizes the same basic strut/multi-link suspension design as the E46 3 Series. However, it has been modified by BMW M GmbH with the changes:

Wider track both (by 3.4-in.) and rear (by 1.8-in.)

bat wing-shaped forged aluminum control arms with bearings, bushings and cushions

(3mm) aluminum thrust

Special wheel bearings

robust subframe from E46

Separate mounting of top spring and anchor points

Modified suspension links with balljoints (instead of rubber

Larger halfshafts and wheel

Unique spring and shock

Larger anti-roll bars front, 21.5mm rear)

The standard E46 M3 is equipped with vented discs measuring in front and 12.9-inches in the rear. the exception of U.S.-spec M3 models, the also feature cross-drilled and a two-piece design in the front up of an aluminum hat that is connected to the portion of the rotor via steel

All M3 CSL and M3 ZCP/CS models sold are fitted with larger front brake rotors are also cross-drilled and incorporate the construction. The rear rotors are the 12.9-inch cross-drilled items.

Like all E46 3 Series, the E46 M3 a rack-and-pinion steering design engine-speed-sensitive variable power However, the system has been with special knuckles and a overall ratio of 15.4:1 13.7:1 in the standard E46 3 Series). A quicker 14.5:1 steering is used in the M3 CSL and M3 ZCP/CS models.

Wheels and tires sizes

The E46 M3 wheel is an 18-inch M Double II cast-alloy design with a Chrome finish. These 8×18-inches in the front and 9×18-inches in the with 225/45ZR18 and 255/40ZR18 (respectively). Forged 19-inch M Spoke II wheels (also in a Chrome finish) were as an option in most markets.

measure 8×19-inch in front and in the rear, with 225/40ZR19 and tires (respectively). A cross-spoke wheel (in identical 8×19-inch/9.5×19-inch was fitted to M3 ZCP and M3 CS models. Finally, the M3 CSL was with either the regular forged M Double Spoke II or a unique cross-spoke design but not identical to that of the M3 ZCP and M3 CS), 8.5×19-inches in front and 9.5×19-inches in the

These were always to track-ready Michelin Pilot Cup tires, sized 235/35ZR19 and 265/30ZR19 (rear).
