BMW R75/5 “On The Lift” Classic Road Test

Welcome to On the Lift episode sponsored by Clymer Manuals. I’m Grooms, Managing Editor.

at the Tech Center today and on the we have a 1970 BMW R75/5. The /5 ( five ) series, introduced for the 70 year, was a real watershed for BMW motorcycle production. The previous of machines [ post war wwII R50 /2 R60 R60US R69 R69S ] were for their reliability, comfort and operation.

Once exclusive to BMW, however, many of the new from Japan [ Honda in with the CB350, CB450 and CB750 ] now achieved this at a price along with performance.

The /5 was available in 500, 600 and 750 cc capacities… being a 750, thus the R75 [ R50/5 R60/5 ]. While on BMWs trademark air cooled twin, the model is a radical in many ways from the models. A telescopic fork the Earles leading link 12 volt electrics replaced a 6 system.

And to the … of many a BMW the bike was available in a color other than schwartz mit

The horizontally opposed twin [ flat twin or airhead ] overhead valves was all-new. the first noticeable change the previous models was the placement of the tubes under the alloy and cylinder heads revealing the camshaft is under the crankshaft. [ Yes While the world was going SOHC and in some case BMW stuck with camshaft in the ] The one-piece alloy crankcase split type bearings in of the previous ball bearing

With aluminum covers the air filter, starter and alternator, the appears to be immense. However, is alloy and once removed you can see how the engine really is. And the heavy crank and cam placed low make for a low of gravity.

You can really feel during low speed maneuverability.

The gear box is splined to a dry single clutch [ /6 on models had a five-speed ]. The kickstarter carried over the older models and as you can see swings out from the bike. Power is through a swing arm mounted shaft to the differential.

The hemispherical heads [ hemi ] are fed on model with CV or constant carbs [ carburetor ]. R50 and R60 s used slide valve carbs. the carbs, spark plugs, breaker points, air cleaner and easily accessed, and shaft airheads are one of the sweetest bikes it comes to working on them [ manual shop manual how to DIY camera mount ]

The front is an 8-inch twin leading setup. By the early 70′s machines in this class had a up front. The rear is a single unit.

Looking back the /5 has developed a appeal, but at the time it was not universal by the purists. Sidecar use wasn’t fiberglass fenders…oh no! And of course the of the chrome tank panels in 72 with a smaller fuel met with strong disapproval. Now toaster tank models higher prices.

The result of low and changing tastes I guess.

production 5s could experience a wobble and a torque reaction chopping the speed in a corner. So in 73 added 2 inches to the swing arm and the frame. So now you have the short base and the long wheel bikes and the “which one is better” continues to this day. the SWB bikes just look and that toaster tank…come I love 60′s era vintage bikes [ like the CB77 CB450 K0 K1 blackbomber Suzuki X6 YR1 ]!

Either way they were and are great machines. The flat was considered a dinosaur by many in Instead of abandoning their [ Germany Germans at their Deutschland uber alles. ], BMW what they knew and a technical masterpiece that has the test of time. This layout would be the foundation for 20 years and launch the R90S, the the R100RT and the R80GS [Manual for /6 R75/6 R90/6 /7 R60/7 R80/7 R100/7 R90S R100T R100 R100CS R45 R65 R80ST R80RT R80 R100GS R100R R80R R1100RS R1100R Manual for 1970 1972 1973 1974 1976 1977 1978 1980 1981 1982 1984 1985 1986 1988 1989 1990 1992 1993 1994 1996 Clymer manual BMW through R100 GS PD M502-3 0-89287-854-1] Music by Kevin BMWON BMWMOA 5UNITED CLYMER CLYMER.COM maintenance repair diy
