The motorcycle was in 2008 at the Intermot in Cologne präsentiert2 and the Berlin BMW plant oxygenation3 since early 2009.

The S 1000 RR is designed as Homologationsfahrzeug for participation in the World Superbike Championship.

The 59.8 kg heavy four-cylinder in-line engine has a displacement of 999 cm ³ and a conventional crankshaft with 180 ° firing interval. Unlike other engines from other manufacturers, the 16 valves (33.5 mm intake and 27.2 mm exhaust valves made of titanium) in the cylinder head is not actuated by bucket tappets, but on extremely small carbon-coated cam followers, which according to BMW substantially lower mass forces against tappets aufweisen.4 This can be realized in principle, higher speeds and tighter timings at lower friction and better filling.

According to BMW, this should allow speeds above 14,000 rpm-1. The motor control can be adjusted in four modes (Rain, Sport, Race, Slick), and controls the variable-length intake pipes and the optional traction control. When Rain mode, the maximum power of 110 kW (150 hp) reduced (from 163 hp model 2012) 5, the Slick mode is enabled only after the insertion of a coding plug (activation barrier).

The force is transmitted to the rear wheel via a multi-disc wet clutch with anti-hopping function, a 6-speed transmission and a sealing ring chain.

In a bench test certifiable standard machine made 147 kW (200 hp) at 12,400 min-1, the maximum torque was 123 Nm at 9400 min-1. Compared to the competition in 2009, the engine had a power increase of about 14.7 kW (20 hp).6

BMW dispensed with the S 1000 RR in-house technology features such as telelever front suspension and Paralever shaft drive with. Instead, the bike with light alloy bridge frame, upside-down forks and swing arm is equipped with usual class indirectly angelenktem Monoshock. The vehicle is offered with either an adjustable, only 2.5 kg ABS and traction control.

Since the 2009 season, BMW is involved with the S 1000 RR SBK factory in the Superbike World Championship. The plant operations are led by the Rosenheim alpha Racing team. The semi-works team alpha Technik Van Zon BMW is for the 2009 season with four riders in the IDM Superbike.

Compared to competitive models like the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 or Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R7 showed in the 50,000-km endurance test of the magazine Motorcycle significant defects: criticism was a run-in inlet camshaft (according to BMW, a Härtungsfehler), timing chain tensioner, wheel and steering head bearings and The S1000RR Abgasklappe.89 thus reaching the 20th Place in the endurance test rating.
