Last Motorcycle Run at the Maxton

A heavily modified Harley-Davidson Sportster making a run at the Maxton

When most people of land speed racing, the flats of Utah come to Miles of smooth white out in seemingly all directions.  But for those who want to travel to the other of the country, there has been a operating right here in Carolina outside of a small called Maxton.

The “Maxton as it is affectionally called by those who there, is a converted runway was originally built in 1942 for WWII glider pilots.  The is roughly 2 miles long, 1 from the starting line to the and slightly less than a for shutdown.  The return road the track, with the pits 1/4 mile from the starting

This track has been by the East Coast Timing and they have put years of work into making an old and pitted concrete runway a useable race track for reaching speeds well 250 mph.

This past (October 29th and 30th) not only the end of the season at the Maxton but also the end of an era.  For the upcoming season, the East Coast Association will be moving operations from Maxton to a new in Wilmington, OH.  Being this would possibly be the time I would be able to see speed racing so close to I decided to make plans to the event on Saturday, spurred on by rumors of a BBQ dinner after the races…

Arriving just after my first stop was the pits and the Jugs Racing trailer.  I’ve ridden guys and gal from Twin for about 15 years and look to coming to events like to catch up with them.  To things even better, the Jugs trailer was set up right to the return road, where lines up to race.  With two days of racing left year, teams were scrambling to get as many in as possible.

Starting just past the the line of cars, bikes and vehicles was literally a mile stretching out past the tower at the end of the track.  Luckily everyone had to the Twin Jugs trailer on way to the starting line and I was able to out at the trailer, watching the parade slowly past.  Whenever something my eye, I just had to walk 10 to check it out.

Of I was on the lookout for Classic American but for the first hour or so I only a variety of vintage European and bikes.  Some of them actually really nice and I couldn’t resist snapping a few of my favorites.  The first was a pair of BMW singles.  Both great looking bikes, but I the green one in particular.

Something the color made the bike out much more than the classic you usually see on old Beemers.  These were looking for speeds in the 70′s, which is not bad for a vintage 250

The next bike to roll past was a Now I admit that I am not a huge fan, but I know a lot of people so I took a few shots of it.  I was taking pictures and talking to the rider of the I learned that he was the author of Sid’s Vincati”.

The book the building of the famed Vincati, is a Vincent motor mounted in a frame.
