Softly, softly… that’s the way other magazines used to the power delivery of the old BMW R1100S.  It so much that the power/torque were bad, it’s that the bike was a little and, come to think of it, just a smidge underpowered for modern age.

So, is the R1100S’s still “softly, softly”?  not a chance.

Let’s get the obvious out of the way with first by comparing stats of each model.  And before reading this adopt your best announcer’s voice.

In this corner the R1200S an air/oil cooled 2 cylinder, engine at 4 valves per cylinder, and the the R1100S, with the same The young upstart sports a of 101mm x 73mm while in the corner the fighting R1100S in with 99mm x 70.5mm.  A bore and …, that can mean trouble for the R1100S.

ladies and gentlemen there is the the R1200S lands a blow at vs. the R1100S’s 1085cc.   Well explains the name change.  Oh, a one-two statistical slam; the comes in with a serious as 122hp vs. the R1100S’s weak at 98hp.

That’s a 10% increase in output, very good!  The R1100 is on the It’s looking soft and it’s age, weighing in at fully fueled road in comparison to it’s sleeker the R1200S coming in at 213kg.

So does this all really In a nutshell, one big … grin and a more focused, fun to ride, Beemer!

Please bear in I used to actually own one of these way back when…and other weight and power I actually had few

BMW folk in general can be a bit uptight changes to their respective especially when fuel and comfort (i.e. ergos) get But in my humble, very humble, this was one makeover that exactly what it should.

The after having ridden newer (06) BMW’s I can say that this is the best of the almost approaching Japanese The suspension; poised, composed, it a line and is quite neutral being too heavy in the esses.   bike really merits a thorough going over.

Torquey, strong, very feel to the powerband, this one raise its wheel in anger.

very nice overall details – no screws hold the to the front cowl, nice and well finished frame and pegs (both passenger and It also sports a very looking multi-led rear light, which is very and visible. And a much narrower, portly appearance to the bike, when you’re on the R1200S or admiring it.

Unfortunately we only had the for a short time.  It was a brief but motorbike love-in, that whet the appetite for a more visit.  It was not however long to create converts.

Now, I know what of you are thinking… He’s already an R1100S before; he is already one of the Yes, I did own one before and on the whole I do to favour bikes with character such as the R1100S, 998, etc…etc… But I am a realist as The specs on paper may still not most even after the diet and exercise program but we to (nay should) remember bikes are more than respective on-paper specs.

Here’s to hoping that we get crack and a lengthier test under our belt.
