The Good and Bad


The bike is a great do-just-about-anything bike. It’s heavier than a MX bike, but for trail riding it was just fine. The larger engine made it better for street riding. Part prices for the bike are extremely reasonable. I ordered most of my parts from Munn Racing, where I get a discount for being a lifetime member of their internet forum.

The engine never missed a beat. It always start and ran perfectly, no matter the altitude. If it weren’t for two things, I would probably still have this bike now.

1) These bike vibrate. It’s not the kind of buzzy vibration you get on a 250/450 MX bike. When people say it’s like riding a paint shaker, they aren’t fibbing. It’s a low frequency, healthy pounding vibration.

I did everything I could think of to reduce the vibes. Heavy bar end weights I made from brass helped. Rubber peg inserts helped. Jetting the carb helped.

Thicker seat and wearing bike shorts under my gear helped. But in reality, anything more than an hour of street riding and it would start to wear me out. I did several half-day rides with the bike, but my hands always tingled through the lunch break, and my butt was usually really unhappy at the end of the day.

2) These bikes are also tall, and I am not. With a seat height of over 38 উচ্চতা (and less sag than a MX bike) I was doing good to get a single toe down when coming to a stop. This made it really hard for me to ride off road.

You can get lowering links, but the bike is still tall no matter what.

3) Clutch slave cylinder tends to leak. It’s a common problem with the 625 engines. You can replace the o-ring a few times, but eventually you need to replace the whole thing.

Mine leaked very minorly, so I was always able to keep an eye on it and keep oil in the master cylinder.

4) Drivetrain vibration was also pretty bad. On almost every spirited ride I did on this bike, I came back with one or two broken spokes on the rear wheel. On several occasions I broke multiple rear sprocket bolts as well.

If a bike ever needed a cush drive, this was it!

5) My bike came with a Baja Designs dual sport kit. I thought the blinker switch was horrible. I had extra parts from my R6, so I wired in the switch unit from that, which was 100% better.

6) The original headlight isn’t very useful for riding at night. I eventually mounted the headlight from a 2003 Z1000 on the bike, which looked spectacutar and had excellent low and high beam visibility.

Supermoto Conversion

I always wanted a supermoto bike, and this was my intentions when I first bought this bike. I spent time collecting parts for the conversion, and once it was done, this may have been the most fun I’ve ever had on a bike on public roads. I bought the following for my conversion:

* KTM supermoto wheelset (17×3.5 front and 17×4.25 rear with cush drive)

* Bearinger 4-piston brake caliper and floating 310mm rotor

* Rear shock from a Duke II (slightly shorter and stiffer springs)

*Custom forks from a 2004 SX that were lowered, sprung, and valved for supermoto use

50 এইচপি) so I was never hitting crazy speeds like a sportbike would when riding spiritedly, but it accelerated plenty hard up to the speed limit. This also lowered the bike enough that I didn’t have any trouble on technical terrain. With the shorter forks (2 drop) and shorter front wheel/tire (another 2 drop) the rake/trail numbers weren’t great.

The bike handled fine, but it wasn’t one you would feel comfortable riding without your hands on the bars.
