BSA and Triumph made oil in frame at the time their production was to an end in the 70’s, this design had 2 problems. Despite both closing Triumph did manage a back but sadly BSA was never again.

One; when the stood for any length of time the would fill with oil by from the oil tank, this applied to the conventional separate oil designs. The cause was gravity and an one-way ball and spring between the oil pump and the crankcase.

The other, because of limited for threaded pipe fittings the was push on rubber pipes with hose clamps, as the got hot and because the pipes were next to the crankcase so did the pipes and then ensued.

Also, on the BSA, the oil feed and return was a triangular fitting that had a bolt and 2 of O-ring seals, clamped to the of the crankcase.

For meanness, the BSA designers the bolt exactly ½ inch (13 mm) a bottom frame tube, so you virtually needed to remove, or at lift, the engine to be able to the O-rings, this was another of potential leakage, especially, as the bike got hot and the O-rings got hard!

My 1972 BSA Oil in Frame A65 was no exception!

The part of my solution, whilst the engine, was to have the bottom of the welded up where the above fitted and tap 2 of ¼ BSP threads, fortunately I 2 of 90 deg. bends that I was to screw into the crankcase and in the right direction.

I say lucky, because the 2 threaded now in the crankcase were very to one another. I then fitted hose tails and the same on rubber pipe. Solution to area, but still push on pipes.

The next phase, how to the push on rubber pipes and to crimped reinforced thread pipes and install an external fitting, that would not allow to feed oil into the sump but allow the suction force of the oil to overcome the ball and spring.

Space is very limited the bottom of the crankcase and the frame and from the oil tank (frame tube) and the crankcase.

At the bottom of the oil tank is a steel plate when removed allows for or replacement of the oil feed filter,

the in the top of the filter fits over a tube, oil supply, which a the bottom of the oil tank (frame tube)

The plate also has a plug for oil change purpose.

is not enough room to fit the external fitting between the oil feed before the rubber tube under the engine and certainly not space between the engine and the even though the pressure is only 22 mm diameter.

My solution was to fit a steel pipe the base plate and up behind the oil base, terminating with a thread, so that space, tight, allowed for all the required

Then it was a matter of measuring, the in-between pipes and fitting

All the fittings and modified base

A view of the completed solution, not the one? but it solved all the problems,
