BSA A 65 SS Firebird

This 1970 BSA A65 Scrambler was bought in 1993 in a condition with many missing. However, the bike had a engine with a hole in the from a thrown piston rod had matching numbers with the and I decided that my search for a bike was over. The bike was apart completely and a trial was done during a period of two

During this time all the parts were sourced in Britain, USA and Sweden. My intention was to use New Old Stock (NOS) parts but intention had to be abandoned due to obsolete parts. However, new pattern were in many cases at reasonably prices and proved to be, some disappointments, of very quality.

In many cases parts sent back to the supplier as did’nt meet up to acceptable

The purpose of the restoration was to create a looking motorcycle with all the of brit bikes from the era, yet be able to use the bike for all of purposes including modern stop-and-go traffic.

The following show most of the modifications and undertaken. The bike was finished in and sounds and run just as good as it

If anyone is about to venture out on a restoration, please feel to contact me!

Ride’em, don’t

The suppliers has been used the project:

SRM Engineering

SRM supplied engine parts including a new head, 750 cc cylinders and pistons. did most of the engineering work as:

Regrinding of crankshaft

Balancing of crankshaft

Roller conversion

Welding of hole in

SRM claims to be the largest supplier of services, aftermarket conversions and for BSA in the world.

To use SRM parts to be worst mistake of all in the project as parts were of poor The list below describes the cases:

The cylinder head was with worn out threads for box and spark plugs.

Clutch glued together on trial almost causing an accident.

had been given wrong or no treatment. Wore out in 500km.

The worn out camshaft cost me one season and almost 100 hours in the garage dismantling the entire cleaning it out and checking for damage by metal particles.

SRM admitted to the and supplied new parts, gasket etc. but since delivery from them was long it all the entire riding season.

The work undertaken by SRM in general from questionable to excellent might indicate that the is quality assurance related.

this restoration SRM has continued to as a supplier and are considered quite Hopefully the problems with control has improved by now.

TMS of Nottingham

TMS supplied both and cycle parts and seems to a large stock of spares for Brit bikes. Good many NOS parts and good pattern parts. Highly supplier. TMS 92-94 Carlton
