Pros: Superb awesome design, 100% fun and all concerns from XB9R

Still not a liter-bike in terms of but this one’s alotttta

The Bottom Line: Probably the fun you’ll find on 2 wheels. If you can let go of the edge Japanese literbikes, American joy is truly a BLAST to

When Buell released the XB9R firerbolt pic’s to the it left the world slack-jawed and A frame that doubled as a tank? A swing-arm that the oil tank? ALUMINUM no less. a wheelbase clearly intended for carving. wow- for someone who the apple didn’t fall far the tree, I was pretty impressed how FAR Buell had removed itself the Harley-side. with the exception of facets of the engine, there’s not too Harley of this bike I to myself. and repeated it after I rode one for a day up in the twisties of back-door new

Obviously, evolution continues- sportbikes have pushed the even farther now- for the last 2 years it was the 600 class got ultra competitive in terms of lightening speed that was too close to call across this year the liter class is in the spotlight- icredible boasting close too 200 shafthorsepower years R1 and Kawi ZX10 are 160 at the wheel. ) and yet even in the midst of insanity, Buell stays the and continues to be devoted to offering sport machines made in the ol’ US of A marketed under the family. Yeah I like my machines, but you can bet I like buying

Enter the Newest Buell the XB12R firebolt. Buell its own envelope this year by the toddler XB platform- now past its and proven in its third year- and has a 1200 v-twin as a follow up to its 900 little brother. The 1200 is an amazing machine- inherently, it be wild since it offers all the handling attributes of it’s sibling, including the same and essentially the same ergo/wheelbase AND the same ultra cool front rotors which had me day one (the first time I saw on a production bike it blew me made me think of the Norton which sadly never to fruition).

Buell’s definitely got it figured out they make a super fun to machine, offer great and now, with the onset of in this top-sport superstar, the is certainly more complete- as of buyers took an XB9 firebolt their teeth as they a bigger engine to complement the ultra-nimble machine. Before we go any I want to be superclear on one thing: the WILL NOT compete on the same as the japanese sport-bike class will — it just reasonable. However the Buell intended for that- it was intended for and stays true to this, as the is A JOY to ride.

This years new engine makes a respectable 103 hp and 84 of torque. Bear in mind, it so at a very realistic 6 grand, peak HP on a japanese machine be probably double that on the rev for reference, my R1’s peak is at and redlines at 12,300.

The Buell super torque- more many japanese machines in Inherently, the v twin is torquier and the does not need to be downshifted a japanese sportbike does- moreso with the 1200, has truly improved the situation. when I wrote my first on the Buell XB9R firebolt, one of my was purely power-related. the 900 really enough to get my blood boiling, the bike more than up for the shortcoming with its superb and manners on the road.

The situation has gotten really now however- because 1200cc’s was the answer in making the Firebolt an eye-tearer without sacrificing the characteristics of the younger sibling. this is one of the hardest parts of such a model — brother design is usually by being unable to fit a larger on the same frame or platform- need to be made- engines or tweaked within the frame- causes weight distribution to and/or shift and it causes handling characteristics to potentially (sometime quite radically) and liter-bikes have had this for some time- it makes a real challenge.

Buell’s chassis/swingarm design make it to squeeze the bigger engine in the without actually causing a squeeze. The air-cooled 1200 has a super cool growl, the factory exhaust note is decent and listenable. Power is absolutely super- the 1200 like a minute-man and power is on

Buell Firebolt Sport Bike

The engine pulls in a very fashion all the way from idle- 3 full-throttle exits are predicatable and meaning there is no need to to second because torque is on tap at an early point on the rev band.

habits-wise, the firebolt is a dream. The wheelbase, taken directly the XB9R concept make almost inevitable, and contrary to of unforgiving japanese machines, the is manageable and predictable- the frame DOES have something over any other design- it is the most tortionally rigid on any bike- the idea was awesome and it to make the buell such a fun bike to thrash.

Braking is with floating 4 pots, the front brakes utilize the BUell inside-out front which offer a more cooling ( and thus stopping ) for the pads to work with. is also very linear and with nearly no signs of There were limited where I did miss my oversize package, however the Buell’s work extremely well the spots which gav eme grief was at late-entrances where I was really to see what this front-end was of. Clearly, the bike is manageable- more than a typical

Buell still has the magic and has the formula correct. Shifting is smooth- still clunky for of you used to japanese razor-like but considering it originates from the shifting is quite good. action is taught and the range is — perfect for quick, free shifts and fast

The Close-ratio gearing is set up nearly for street and highway, only if you understand how to push will you be you had another gear- the bike very well and most I suspect, the rider will be focused on making better and faster exits based on riding skills than the bike had more. This a charm.

Final Considerations: a Buell is a Buell. This NOT be my choice for a track bike- it is intended to be a street-use bike for who like to turn- STILL, it is not a track-tool. how could it be- read hte japanese liter class and assured, there will be no made there. So basically, if thinking to use this bike as a tool- forget it.

But if you are looking for joy on two wheels, the Buell is a choice- it does just everything and does it very Luggage options are obviously softbags will work, but is not a tourer. this is a balls-to-the-wall done American style. to Buell for really putting such an amazing effort and a wonderful machine.
