Intro

For the 2005 model year, Harley-Davidson, via its now-defunct subsidiary Buell Motorcycle Company, jettisoned the XB9S models that comprised its Lightning sport bike nameplate. In its place was a spruced-up version of the XB9S called the Buell Lightning CityX, hence the official XB9SX suffix. Buell gave the 2005 Buell Lighting CityX a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $8,695.

Each 2005 Buell Lightning CityX is powered by a fuel-injected four-stroke V-twin (two-cylinder) engine. It displaces at 984 cubic centimeters, and generates 92 horsepower at 7,500 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 70 pound-feet (lb-ft) of torque at 5,500RPM.

The engine has a total of four intake valves, with two on each cylinder; a bore and stroke of 3.5 x 3.13 inches (88.9 x 79.4 millimeters); and a compression ratio of 10 to 1. Each engine on the 2005 CityX is paired with a five-speed manual transmission. For fuel, the CityX gets a 3.7-gallon (14-liter) gas tank, with a 0.7-gallon (2.6-liter) reserve.

For its braking ability, the 2005 Buell Lightning CityX uses all-wheel disc brakes, with a 14.8-inch (375-mm) one at the front and a 9.5-inch (240-mm) one at the rear. The Showa®-branded suspension on the 2005 CityX is composed of a 1.7-inch (43-mm) inverted fork and twin-sided swing arm with rear shock. Each bike rides on huge 17-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in Pirelli® tires.

Harley-Davidson designed and marketed the 2005 Buell Lightning CityX as a streetfighter sport bike. Thus it does not have a frame-covering shell, or fairing. However, the 2005 CityX has several parts covering or adorning its lightweight yet sturdy aluminum frame. They include a spoiler; front fender; and engine case, fork, tank, belt, hand and light guards. The bike’s digital dashboard consists of a clock, tachometer, trip odometer, speedometer, and fuel level warning gauge.

For increased visibility on the road, the 2005 CityX has halogen headlights and rearview mirrors.

Each 2005 Buell Lighting CityX is 76.2 inches (1,935.5 mm) long, 32.3 inches (820 mm) wide and 42.3 inches (1,075 mm) high; and it has a wheelbase of 52 inches (1,320 mm). The bike’s ground clearance and seat height are measured at 4.4 inches (111 mm) and 30.6 inches (777 mm). With a dry weight of 385 lbs. (175 kilograms) and payload capacity of 400 lbs. (181 kilograms), the 2005 CityX has a gross vehicle weight rating of 850 lbs. (386 kilograms).

The 2005 Buell Lightning is a bigger and heavier bike than the XB9S models from the previous year. Apart from that, though, it’s virtually the same overpriced and overlooked yet powerful ride that Buell served throughout its eight-year production run.
