Regular readers may remember we had rather a high opinion of the Lightning XB12S when we it earlier this year. It in fact, one of the most entertaining and bikes we had ever encountered. You may remember that a couple of ago we ran a short news item the new CityX and what a laugh it as though it would be.

Well now tested one. And we were only in that we underestimated how much fun it would be.

Buell are now importing the Firebolt and Lightning as so if you want the 900 motor you’ll to come here for it. But that’s not a bad believe me. The 900, while lacking some of the outright of its larger brother, is a sweeter revving more freely I suspect, more likely to well to a few judicious tweaks. But as it 84bhp at something just tickover is still plenty.

on that in a minute, though. For now just take in the looks.

The Buell Lightning is not, fair to say, a very motorbike. Characterful, yes. even. But not pretty. And the CityX that characterful attractiveness, away a little of the prettiness and something else.

That else is attitude. Something the was hardly short of in the first So your basic Lightning satin black wheels. The bodywork, such as there is, is as well.

The city is a filthy place and the amount of road that gets thrown up non-glossy black a Good But while we’re on wheels, the get a slightly higher, rounder with the fitment of Pirelli — the first time the company has supplied OE tyres to or Harley Davidson. The tread is great for clearing water and the irregularities you can reasonably expect town, while the higher makes the ride a little plush.

Cast alloy lower the pegs a little the seat is slightly more to make the seat to peg distance comfortable at the expense of making the bike a little taller. And the of course) bars are higher and with a meaty cross-brace in style. Brushguards are hardy in town but do a great job of protecting the from marauding transit van as well as keeping them as the windblast gets neatly

But the real icing on the cake is the bodywork which can only be as sheer genius. You’ll like it or hate it, though I find anyone who thought it other than fantastic, but the opinion you’ll never be The roo bars on the lights are a bit over the but again given the overall of the CityX they’re hardly out of at all.

Leaving the Buell up guaranteed attention. Riding it was better. There are those who that if it walks like a and quacks like a duck it’s a duck.

Well, quacks like a Harley, gear like a Harley and stops and goes like entirely different. I may not be sure that means it should be, but I can tell you what it is.

Fantastic fun.

Around the CityX is nigh on unbeatable. The bars give stacks of the turning circle is good and the brakes are phenomenal and the whole is skinny enough to get through gaps. But it gets better. The and sheer bloody mindedness to conspire to shout GET OUT OF THE DAMN’ with sufficient authority the CityX is one of the quickest cross bikes I have ever

Add the proper exhaust rather the rather emasculated standard one and pop a of HID bulbs in to get a really bright, blue light and you’d ever get stuck in traffic. And the traffic gets really, bad you can go cross country if necessary. I was for a photo location and found slightly different.

But in spite of as accomplished an off road rider as the spaniel, I found the CityX to be understanding and easy to pick up I dropped it. That last is a joke — we managed to upright and the Buell did a great job of it as easy as possible for me.

As far as the basic necessities are concerned, the has them covered. The mirrors are and, when not vibrating the into a blur are actually good. The horn is OK — an thing for town riding though I’d add the ambience of the kit exhaust to make really they hear you coming the clocks are clear enough of the time and nice to look at as

Switchgear is impeccable in positioning and

Bad things? Sure, the gearbox is the same as before. But it’s you ride around and get used to. And in it may not be the slickest box ever, or the fastest, but I miss a single gear in weeks riding every

If you get out of town and start to really on then you’ll feel the blocks walking a bit. Not a but a little unsettling. So if you’re to do that a lot then may I respectfully you at the Lightning? But if I had to find a single fault it is the mirrors.

They are quite clear at but in town they’re all but unusable vibration. May not be a big deal but it’s a trying sometimes. Oh, and the shorty cheesegrater pretending to be a mudguard that when it rains you get a wet

And if you’re carrying a rucksack it jetwashed from the bottom. And

But those are all outweighed by the sheer factor of this bike, to the fact that it is astonishingly and spectacularly good value to Practicality comes with fuel consumption, bullet engine and nice things steel mudguards you can strap onto. There’s a pillion too, but you’d have to be really good friends.

strap your bag there — it stays drier

And the feelgood part?

Every time I rode bike I grinned. Then And then laughed out loud. It is a exuberant eccentric piece of usable fun.

And that makes it worthy of being one of the finest bikes I have ridden. And, of course, the small matter of the price. A small matter indeed. a steal.

STOP PRESS If you a bit of a hybrid, you can fit any or all of the modifications (except the to, for example, your 1200 Now that would be mental. you do it, could I have a go?
