2008 Buell 1125R ECM Update / Reflash

April 29, 2008: Buell Motorcycle Company is releasing an updated Electronic Control Module (ECM) calibration for all 1125R motorcycles built prior to April 04, 2008.

The new/updated ECM calibration provides improved cold and hot restart functionality and improved throttle response. The updated calibration also provides optimized electrical system draw and electrical accessory operation.

Owners of affected Buell 1125R motorcycles may obtain the ECM update via reflash free of charge at any Buell dealership.

Motorcycles Affected

This Product Program applies to all (foreign and domestic) 2008 Buell 1125R models built prior to April 04, 2008.

System functions updated with new calibration:

Accessory port is controlled by the ECM and will turn off if the ECM reports a deficit on the charging system. Do not install accessories directly to the battery or anywhere else on the bike except the accessory plug.

ECM will now control cooling fan operation independently and is regulated by coolant temperature and battery voltage.

Idle RPM is now impacted by inputs from coolant temperature and battery voltage. This may raise the RPM slightly if the programmed conditions are met. Under normal operation the idle will remain at 1250 RPM.

Idle Air Control function has been changed to improve tip-in throttle response and low speed driving.

Low Battery Voltage Lamp will now come on at 11.9 volts instead of 11.5 volts to provide improved maintenance notification.

It is normal for the fuel pump to cycle periodically to maintain fuel pressure after key off. The amount of time allowed for this has been reduced from 20 minutes to 10 minutes maximum.

Your 2008 Buell 1125R, if built prior to April 4th, may receive the ECM via re-flash free of charge at any Buell dealer.

Updated ECM calibrations are reportedly ready to go for all domestic/USA (California included), European, Australian models.

All H-D/Buell dealers have an online tool known as H-DNet. There’s a Service Document Viewer that should show all bulletins, product updates, warranty info, and stuff like that, including this one.

If they don’t provide one, ask your dealer for your reflash verification printout.

Note: Despite normal convention which requires use of 12V vehicle power, it seems that in order to guarantee success when reflashing Buell DDFI-3 ECMs, the TechLink II (the orange box) must be powered by AC.

Digital Tech II support always says that when communicating with the vehicle via the ALDL connector, it should be done on vehicle power. This may be a new issue with Buell models only. If the vehicle battery has 12+ VDC, and the technician is having difficulty with the re-flash procedure (possibly at the key off/key on sequence), then the TechLink II should be put on AC power after restarting DT II (rebooting the machine completely, otherwise you will encounter unhandled exception errors).

Thankyou goes out to BadWeb Liberty HD/Buell for this info.
