Erik Buell Racing has finally taken the covers off its first road bike, the 1190RR, a 200hp beast that will compete with the Ducati 1198 and KTM RC8R

After teasing us for what seems like an eternity, Erik Buell Racing (EBR) has finally come clean with its first street-legal motorcycle, the EBR 1190RR.

The reason the for extended teaser campaign for the new EBR 1190RR is that Erik Buell was not able to release a road-going motorcycle for 12 months after Harley-Davidson shut down Buell motorcycles.

But now that 12 months has passed and this is ostensibly the newest Buell to hit the streets, a V-twin sports bike that will rival the likes of the Ducati 1198 and KTM RC8R – both in terms of performance and hefty price tag.

EBR had not released a price for the new model at the time of writing, but it’s expected to be offered for around $40,000 and will be offered initially in North America in limited quantities.

If the hi-po V-twin ever did make its way to Australia, it would attract a big premium and would probably sell for around $50,000.

Based on the EBR 1190RS race bike, the road-going version is expected to ultra light weight for its engine size, around 175kg (10kg more than the race bike), while producing somewhere in the vicinity of 200hp (147kW) at the crankshaft.

The 1190cc V-twin engine diverts its power to a six-speed manual gearbox and is a tweaked (de-tuned) version of the race engine. The Rotax engine comes with titanium valves and is expected to make it devilishly quick. The EBR 1190RS also features scads of high quality components, starting with carbon-fibre bodywork and magnesium wheels.

Can you say lightweight?

Chassis wise, it’s top shelf Scandinavian stuff in the form of adjustable Ohlins suspension front and rear. The instrument display is an AiM Sports digital array, which also has data-logging functionality for those who plan to take their bikes on the race track.

The EBR 1190RS was built with input from the likes of Alex Barros and Jeremy McWilliams, both former MotoGP riders, so it can be expected to be a nimble jigger. And as the photos show the road-legal sports bike features unique exhaust pipes, plus new fairing, headlights and indicators.

It also retains a couple of trademark Buell items; rim-mounted single front disc brake and fuel tank inside the aluminium frame.
