First Ride: 2004 MZ 1000S — Road Tests: First Rides — Visordown

First Ride: 2004 MZ 1000S The last time I rode anything with an MZ badge on the tank, it was a ratty old two-… commuter that smoked like a chimney and had the disturbing habit of leaving various parts littered behind it on the road. This image may be what first springs to mind whenever the name MZ is mentioned, but it’s a reputation that the company is trying to shed. The smoky two-strokes were banished to the back rooms when the Berlin Wall fell down, while the company turned its attention to large capacity four-strokes. To be fair, it has been making the four-… 660cc Baghira supermoto for a while now, but it’s the new MZ 1000S and its 1000cc parallel twin engine ...

Sports activities started in 1927 Motocross Streetracing 1958 first wins in 125/250 cc and an over all second championship 250 cc The MZ two strokes, developed by engineer Walter Kaaden have influenced motorcycle racing for decades. His revolutionary two … system was copied widely in the sixties and the beginning of a domination of street racing by two strokes from Japanese manufacturers. Sadly, the East-German government did not exactly support the international racing aspirations of MZ. The defection to the West of grand prix rider Ernst Degner, complete with a set of secrets, started the end of the glory years of Kaadens bikes. The Skorpion Sport 660 cc single got its own ...

Ed Youngblood’s Motohistory News April 2007

Motohistory Quiz #38: We have a winner! ( 4/26/2007 ) Motohistory Quiz #38 ended quickly with a smack-down by Bruce Williams of Cortland. Ohio. We circulated our update notification at 10:11:06 p.m. EDT. and Williams responded with the correct answer at 10:16:02. Not only did he identify the engine pictured as that of the German-built Windhoff, but he provided a lot of correct technical information about this remarkable motorcycle as well. Windhoff manufactured radiators before getting into motorcycle production, which it undertook from 1924 to 1933. Its first designs were 125 and 175cc liquid-cooled two-strokes. The model pictured in our quiz is the most sensational of Windhoff’s ...

2005 Moskito 125R 2005 MZ Moskito 125R In 1907, a German company known as Dampf-Kraft-Wagen (DKW) started out producing engines for bicycles. In the 1920s, DKW began producing 2-… engines for motorcycles, and their designs went on to dominate all forms of motorcycle racing from 1922 to 1936, winning 45 championships in the process. In 1956, DKW changed its name to Motorradwerk Zschopau, or MZ. Due to wartime conditions, MZ continued to produce engines and bikes in East Germany, but it was purchased by Hong Leong Group out of Malaysia, which proceeded to introduce MZ technology to North America. The 2005 MZ Moskito is a scooter offered in several engine variants, from 50cc up to 125cc, ...

MZ ETZ 250 Tuning — Real Classic Motorcycle Rebuild Techniques

MZ ETZ 250 Tuning Derek Pickard looks at the stock MZ250 carb situation, tries the alternatives, finds what works and gives the details of how to make your ETZ run super sweet. Let’s start with a few hard facts: The BVF carb as fitted to the MZ two-strokes can only be considered ‘average’ in its metallurgy and machining. It is the main contributor to bad starting and rough running. As the carb wears, that bad behaviour gets worse. This can be corrected by replacement. The trick is to know which carb and how to make it fit and work. We all like the unique MZ 250. The bike works well as a good basic rider but it does mean accepting a few compromises. As the years pass and ...

MZ 125 SM

Road test pictures by Dick Henneman If you’ve entered your teens with a need for two-wheels, lusting after Fireblades, R1s, GSXR1000s, ZX10s and the like, then the start your eighteenth year on this planet is the moment of liberation. From this point on, the UK Powers That Be have said that you, yes you, are responsible and … enough to be ‘trusted’ with the operation of a real motorbike with gears and a clutch. Are they sane or what? But there’s a catch — there always is! They say that it can’t have an engine capacity greater than 125cc and may not develop more than 15bhp. Hmm? Okay, it can still have style, cool, and most important of all — ...

The company has based its recent history upon a variety of single-cylinder machinery — from sidecar rigs to sportbikes and dualsports, MZ has bet the Zschopau factory on the appeal of thumpers. In fact, the choice of a single-cylinder powerplant for the Skorpian Tour represents commitment to a design philosophy of simplicity and light weight. Weight saving measures are evidenced throughout: single front disc brake, small rear disc brake, no cumbersome fairings or excess bracketry, and a single round headlight to guide your way. At 416 pounds ready to ride, as is claimed in the owner’s manual, the Skorpion Tour is a lithe, nimble machine. The entire Skorpion line shares the same ...

MZ 1000SF Press Launch

1000SF Press Launch — Costa del Sol Words and pictures by Dick Henneman Is it a bird? — No Is it a plane? — No It’s a Superfighter, MZ’s new 1000cc streetfighter-styled … bike, derived from the 1000S sports tourer. We liked the 1000S a lot when it was launched in the UK last year, so apart from the fact that the weather in Malaga was going to be a lot better than England in February (or so I thought!), I was really looking forward to a first ride on the 1000SF. I’m glad to say that I wasn’t disappointed, but more of that later. 2004 wasn’t a very good year for the motorcycle market or the German economy, and MZ have felt the pinch as ...
