2006 Ducati 1000 Sport

2006 Ducati 1000 Sport Classics has become a familiar sight since it was first introduced as a concept machine at the Tokyo Show in November 2003. This new family of bikes is the brainchild of Ducati design chief Pierre Terblanche. Its members are three very different machines, all based around a similar rolling chassis powered by the latest air-cooled 1000DS engine, two-valve.


The first is the Sport 1000 and Paul Smart LE 1000 here (although Terblanche itself shows that the original Sport Classic and fourth family member is a limited edition inspired MH900e Mike Hailwood in 2000). A third, GT 1000, will follow in April.

All, Terblanche asserts, not a replica of the famous Ducati 1970s (as a glance at their style might suggest). Instead they are full-on, a modern sports bike that takes styling cues from, and pay tribute to, the famous ancestor of the 1970′s.

Although in many ways overshadowed by a more comprehensive engine complete, expensive and famous Paul Smart, Sport 1000 $ 10.995, chronologically speaking, the father of the Sport Classic range. He took inspiration from the tangerine yellow Ducati 750 Sport 1973 to 1978 (thus pre-dating the 1974 Supersport upon which Smart machine is mostly based).

Take a second look at the traditional twin shock rear suspension units and counting. That’s right. Although the 1000 Sport has a conventional swingarm layout there is only one surprise – on the left.

Rights was canceled so neat, stacked twin silencers hugged back as tightly as possible for maximum ground clearance.

It’s hard to explain why that might be – there is no obvious reason for it, there is no performance without stopping, no cutting edge chassis set-up (with 56.1-in wheelbase is actually longer than the SS). But what there is, is that light flexible but the free-revving V-Twin, (to the point of behaving) that beg for steering through the changes dice, bags of ground clearance, which was once planted in his ear that plain addictive, and taste for the wheelies reminiscent of the original Monster 1993.
