When Italian motorcycle company Ducati Motor Holding S.p.A. (Ducati) released the Ducati 1098 in 2007, a superbike from in-house designer Giandrea Fabbro, it was a resounding success. To some people, it evoked memories of the Ducati 916, a 1990s-era sport bike that had the same styling traits. Ducati did not tinker with the winning formula at all with the second model year: the 2008 Ducati 1098.

The 2008 Ducati 1098 is split into three models: the regular bike (Base), the mid-level 1098 S, and the top-tier 1098 R. Like many motorcycles, the 2008 Ducati 1098 is named after its engine displacement, which is measured at 1,099 cubic centimeters (cc), rounded down to 1,098. However, interestingly enough, the engine on the 1098 R displaces at 1,198.4 cc. Also, the R engine is more powerful.

While the unit on the 1098 Base and S models generate 160 horsepower at 9,750 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 90.4 pound-feet (lb-ft) at 8,000 RPM, the one on the S surpasses it with 180 horsepower at 10,000 RPM and 99.1 lb-ft at 7,750 RPM.

The engine on each 2008 Ducati 1098 is a four-stroke, double longitudinal-cylinder, eight-desmodromic valve engine called the Testastretta Evoluzione. A liquid cooler goes on each engine for preventing overheating or malfunction. The engine’s bore and stroke is 4.1 by 2.55 inches for the Ducati 1098 Base and S, and 4.18 by 2.68 inches for the Ducati 1098 R.

Each 2009 Ducati 1098 engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, ideal for the exciting, performance-fueled feel of driving a sport bike. The dry multi-plate clutch with hydraulic control, with the noise it generates, only adds to the racing-oriented experience. Peak fuel capacity for each model is estimated at 4.1 gallons.

Each 2008 Ducati 848 has an engine immobilizer to deter theft bike thieves, halogen headlights for superior exterior lighting, rearview mirrors for enhanced visibility when driving, and a guard for protecting occupants from the heat of the exhaust. Big 17-inch five-spoke aluminum wheels and all-wheel disc brake layout from Brembo help with the bike’s superior braking and handling.

A digital dashboard at the front includes a clock; lap timer; trip odometer and computer; speedometer; and temperature warning, fuel level and service reminder indicators. Sharp-edged in styling, the 2008 Ducati 848 is padded with aggressive-looking fenders, fairing, and spoiler.

The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices for the 2008 Ducati 1098 are as follows: $15,995 for the 1098 Base model, $20,995 for the 1098 S and $39,995 for the 1098 R.
