2010 Ducati Hypermotard 796 – Hyperactive inner city

Only two years has passed Ducati launched the original Hypermotard. I tested the Hyper with Ruben Xaus past me with thumbs up and down at the Mores circuit in and loved it. Now just two years ahead of the 2010 season is ready with the first to the Hypermotard family.

Hypermotard is one of the satisfying motorcycles in the world to really hard and the new 803cc is no different.

The Hypermotard 796 is a motorcycle where you feel that you’re on top of the front wheel. It gives front end confidence and I am throwing the 796 the tight corners always that there’s plenty of clearance. In the hills surrounding and Ducati’s home town of Panigale the roads are pure heaven.

It all started out nicely for us 28 degrees Celsius and sparkling It quickly changed into that also spread a lot of autumn leafs onto the corners. During my day of testing 796) the conditions changed perfect to treacherous and back to again.

Despite the soaking I’m to say that I did get enough dry miles to get to know Ducati’s new Hyper

During the press conference James the Hypermotard project told us not to mistake the new 803cc for just a large bore James emphasised that the 796 power plant is all new. The 796 feels a lot more potent the Monster 696 and with its claimed 81 hp @ and around 77Nm of torque @ it pulls strongly also 200km/h.

The midrange is what attract us to the Hyper 796 though and the is strong from 4.000rpm and up 6.500rpm. Only in first did I bother to hit the limiter just 8.500rpm and in all the higher gears I’d up somewhere between 7 and 8.000rpm.

I up to sixth gear at low speeds a of times to test and I must say the engine feels quite compared to let’s say the 1100 but talking rpm around 2-3.000 so not so much of a real life The 803cc L-twin needs at 4.000rpm to spin around objections. If the front wheel point sky high @ 8.000rpm in gear then that’s due to a careful throttle hand.

A wheelie is very elusive on entry level Monster, the Hyper 796 will happily do all day long in first gear. to me demonstrates nicely what has done with this new engine. The 696’s engine really suit the Hypermotard as the 796 is really meant for a slightly spectacular riding style in my opinion.

The cynic in me can see a slight undermining of the name now that Ducati us both the Hypermotard and Streetfighter. since strong rumours that Ducati will the Hypermotard 1100 with from the 796 AND with more

The 796 engine features crankcases hugs the internals closer weight (a full 1.2 kilo to the 696) and a high 11:1 ratio. Significantly Ducati added a second Lambda for finer analysis of the exhaust providing Ducati’s most efficient engine to date. To top it all off the is also a long 12.000 service interval.

Back on the there’s one thing in particular I like and that’s the feel of the 305mm Brembo brakes. The 167 dry weight contributes, the new 43mm fork contributes but most of all the upright riding position and the to slide forward in the seat braking for the tightest corners. I to ride also the Hypermotard 796 style and it works!

The new seat is lower than on the 1100 and it’s only a re-profiling of the seat they are interchangeable you wish a taller seat and versa. The footpegs are dimensioned for MX so it’s only a matter of your foot out in the corners. The 796 rides fine in conventional too of course.

Ducati has opted for sticky rubber in the BT016 in a 120/70 front and a 180/55 ZR17 Ducati’s trademark trellis is once again in place but a of the rear top part of the subframe has in another small weight The chassis that also the same single sided as the 1100 is as stable and rigid as

My only complaint is that the heavy steering-feel of the front and big turn radius at crawling is further away from a than anything else. The both front and back a little soft for my 90 kilos but the adjustable Sachs monoshock it a couple of times over surfaces.

The Hyper 796 is a serious machine both on corner mid corner and corner exits. The 796 for corners and it seems whilst that every single was designed for the Hypermotard. The truth is these roads were for horses hundreds or even a of thousand years ago and that’s why are so exciting to ride on a modern horse.

The new engine with its smooth delivery enables me to get on the throttle very early from lean angles. There’s too much power and in these corners never too little The 796 just feels right and very easy to get up to speed. I got to test the bike in heavy too which can be a very slippery this time of year … leafs blanketing the

Whilst having to tiptoe the around the tightest corners still considerable amount of available which gives to the lightweight chassis, smooth and sticky Bridgestone rubber. As for me the the Hypermotard isn’t the greatest on a rainy day as there’s no weather whatsoever. At least I got rid of a couple of flies on my leather suit.

The sun after lunch and we were to business as usual. The switchgear and instrument panel (but plenty of functions) comes from the new Ducati Streetfighter and from laptime counter to a clock is easily available only my thumbs.

Back in we hit the city traffic just rush hour. The folding are easily adjustable and can be flapped in should you need to avoid a mirror impact whilst splitting. The hand guards mostly as wind protection and be slightly pricier to replace on a real motard should you the Hyper. That’s because mirrors and the integrated blinkers are to take a beating.

In really slow traffic gear can still be used first gear be too “hyper”. For the urban fun ride that end provides you with exactly you need to show the cars you the perfect rear end too. If really good you’ll be to show the entire underside in stoppie style with ease than the majority of out there.

At the end of a mixed day weather I was glad to see the big Ducati signs signalling that I’d been to bring the Hypermotard 796 all the way back to the factory in Borgo Panigale.

I always had a soft spot for the since the concept bike of I can’t imagine many more suitable for a thrill and urban hell raisers, from perhaps the 1100 But fact is that I always that the Hypermotard would a smaller engine just too and with the 796 Ducati has done that.

It did actually surprise me a deal that Ducati had for an all new engine rather than the 696 but we’re all better off for it. The 796 has got that extra over the 696 needed for the hooligans out there. If you were one of people thinking that the 696 was a little on the soft side for an level motorcycle then the 796 could well be it.

It’s not comfortable, but it’s fun.

The 796 engine has got that extra needed to go “Hyper”

lightweight chassis and nearly handling

Love it or hate it but in my the styling is a plus and also that great action position

20mm lower height is far from comfortable

A limitation as the Hyper 796 is only as fun as it is on roads.
