Nail biting finale at Dirt Bronco sees KTM dominating National Motocross Championship

Monday, September 26, 2011 at 8:15PM

The final round of the Full Throttle National Motocross Championship took place this past weekend at the Dirt Bronco race track in Gauteng where most of the championships were still up for grabs.

An overcasted and cold day greeted riders and supporters alike with no sun to see and chances of rain which surely would have upset some of the heats. Despite all the miserable weather forecasts the weather held out and the sky even cleared later in the day.

In the 50cc Junior class a sea of orange was lined up at the start and only two points were seperating leading Grant Hutton from second placed Cameron Durow. A great first heat saw Durow taking the lead and the talented youngster managed to get enough points in heat two to bring home the South African National Motocross title for Team Comsol KTM.

A more comfortable lead of twelve points saw Ethan Boshi going into the final round of the championship with Keegan Hickson-Mahony in second and Seth Van Den Abeele in third. After recently clinching the FIM Africa as well as the National Regional Championship Boshi now had to concentrate on the last National race for 2011. He did his sponsors proud and managed to secure the 65cc National Motocross title, making it a ‚full house’ for Ethan Boshi this year.

The 125 MX High School class saw the talented Calvin Vlaanderen taking an early lead in both heat one and two. Although having missed an entire round of the championship due to participating in the Junior Motocross World Championship in Italy earlier this year, Vlaanderen still manged to win his class onboard his KTM 125 SX machinery by winning all five rounds in which he participated this year.

The showdown however, which all the spectators came out to watch, was the duel in the premier MX2 class between Red Bull KTM’s Kerim Fitz-Gerald and Mr Price Yamaha’s Richard Van der Westhuizen. Fitz-Gerald, who went into the final round with a five points lead over Van der Westhuizen, quickly took the lead in heat one and pulled a comfortable gap between him and the rest of the field onboard his KTM 250 SX machinery. The second heat was a mirror image of heat one, seeing Fitz-Gerald taking the holeshot and pulling again a massive gap, winning both heats on the day and bringing home the MX2 National Motocross title for KTM.

KTM proved again that the orange machinery manfactured and developed in Austria is the weapon of choice in Motocross. Not just the likes of MX1 World Champion Antonio Cairoli and MX2 World Champion Ken Roczen rely on it, also local South African competitors trust the orange high performance products.

In order to support National Motocross KTM South Africa has launched their KTM PRO Race Orange Contingency Program where top three finishers in every class get rewarded for their efforts in form of vouchers and/or prize money. It has been a very successful season so far with four National titles, so KTM will offer the Contingency Program again for 2012 and reward competitors after every National as well as with a championship bonus at the end of the year.
