Passion play

THE third Ducati Hypermotard, the is a smaller capacity machine many will find is fun and less intimidating than brother 1100 and EVO SP. Both bikes can easily loft the end and pull your arms out of sockets, if provoked.

The 796 is a little circumspect where outright in concerned, but makes up for it in sheer friendliness. The first characteristics themselves apparent to me were the weight overall, combined the lightest clutch action ever experienced on a Ducati. augers well for a ‘balanced something real-world riders can exploit on their favourite bit of bliss.

Combined with the nature of the 796 is another key element in the the comfort. This bike has a comfortable riding position, and the whilst minimalist enables on-bike movement in spirited and reasonable comfort in the transport

The ‘bars are wide and include mirrors, and the instrument panel is from the Streetfighter model.

One would expect the steering to be no surprises here. All the elements of motorcycle complement one another to a high degree it’s to imagine a more responsive, punchy yet manageable funster.

We mentioned the brakes, four radial tackle offering feel and incredible power.

The engine is the familiar 803cc two-valver, however it’s an on all those prior to this It makes more power vs 74hp) and torque. In horsepower around a 10 per cent increase.

Us mortals are said to ‘notice’ per cent, it’s certainly as is the pleasant exhaust rumble. and offers optional louder too.  More compression vs 10.7), an 848-style flywheel and crankcases all add to the result.

A larger air box and new ECU do bit and all of a sudden I’m wondering why I think a 80-plas horsepower bike more than 800cc is or lacks anything at all?

12 lighter than its big brother, Ducati’s new wet slipper clutch, the 796 as a serious mount in its own right.

The engine liked a nice before being asked to immediately like many Dukes but once warm was very responsive. Ordinary achieves this in five or 10 but it was the middle of winter.

I found the to my liking, probably as my 110kg everything nicely, my co-tester the set up on the 1100 more, and we worked out swapped bikes at a point our riding had changed from cruising’, to a sportier version of

He indicated a preference for a firmer set up, I favoured the 796′s softer Just as well, there is adjustment available except on the rear spring.

In this day and it would be nice if all motorcycles had a adjustment for the rear shock. skinning your knuckles and up just when you shouldn’t!

is a general comment however, and fair to say I could have the 796HM home just as she

Twists and turns

During my with the Hypermotard I tackled a of different types of road. On it’s easy to stay legal-ish limits, there is no to protect you from the wind and 110/120kmh is a reasonable compromise.

Try and the format of the bike forces you that elbows out, down, supermoto position.

obvious to other road you are perhaps offending the provisions of the Act but enormous fun nonetheless.

Get onto the backroads and it’s clear she at home. Change direction, brake, and charge through the and it’s very tempting to for a road closure and get out the stop

If there is a factory ‘hill or ‘road crosser’, this is it. All the the integrated balance of the design at you, and shrugs, “…well, did you expect?”

Finally on dirt, fun at slower speeds, makes me about the potential for a 21-inch wheeled version, and Ducati’s Pikes Peak hillclimb (with the 1100, but check out: The Hypermotard extends on a Ducati.

The passion

The 796 makes it accessible/affordable, and friendly, without seriously the end product in order to achieve the

I feel the whole HM model is capable of calling for a better but the 796 is closer to most real riders than the 1100s feel as if they are on serious of steroids! I am reminded of the footage of the HM (http://tinyurl.com/35ks5v6) at Sardinia a while where Ruben Xaus and twisted the new bike, and that photo was taken (see

One hand off the bars, saying to the camera, knee down, wheel trying to overtake the which is seriously opposite (he did it repeatedly)…..and the audio revealing the screams of protest from the package, heard above the boom of the down changing

Like all Ducatis the Hypermotard is passion, the passion for riding, the visceral experience. Now, I ride ‘em like Ruben but this bike is one hell of a lot of and would be an excellent starting for such a journey.

With a new knockdown price of the 796 Hypermotard is good buying, if you are after a fun bit of gear.

While we are looking at the 796 in this test, I had a run on the 1100 Hypermotard, and not that ago spent some extended with it.

In my opinion most would probably dismiss the HM as a bike, something for short and insanity type fun. would be a mistake however.

the 1100 has enough horsepower to be fun and blur scenery pronto, but very design allows it to along without fuss, mile after mile.

The position might look trail bike than but once again, it’s a comfortable machine to spend a day in the on.

Proof in the pudding for me was a trip year down to Bright and I travelled around 3000 or so in four days, including one kilometre run on the last day.

The bike was equipped with tank panniers which very cool and held gear to get us through the trip. The had the panniers sit either side of the and even worked well to keep some of the cool air off my regions.

Overall a very and usable machine.

The 1100 Evo SP is on sale for $20,990.
