A couple of ago we showed the Ducati 900 GTS custom by René Waters, a Canadian aficionado who runs the website Ducati That bike was hugely with readers, and now René has another 900 GTS—this time a racer for his wife Sue. the story, once again in own words.

This café started life as a 1978 a pretty staid tourer denigrated by Ducati enthusiasts and at the time. Mostly it was the general finish typical of Italian of the era, and the ‘standard’ styling of the People were used to the race bikes that built, and felt let down by the range.

The bikes themselves and are, very good but were panned for their

Therefore when I acquired one, for my wife Sue, we set improving those looks. I asked her what she wanted to do it she immediately replied that she to “make a classic Italian racer … turn it into an SS for

The first thing to go was the bodywork. So off the tank, seat and side ugly—and both fenders. these were stainless they just didn’t the right look, being too and pedestrian.

The tank was replaced a steel one from a ’78 SS, and brackets had to be to fit it to the GTS frame mounting points.

The covers were replaced fiberglass replica SS ones for me from molds of the originals. I the existing frame mounts and the holes in the side covers to I found an original dual for a ’78, but wanted to be able to use dual and solo seats. you bought an SS new in 1978 you got both.) The seat in the pictures is a reproduction up on eBay.

The fenders were replaced reproduction SS units, and a NOS original CEV tail light and bracket Next came the fairing, from Phil Hitchcock Race Ducati  in Australia—an source for anyone with a Ducati. I also got an original five light dash from him, and an original rear fairing mount.

lights for the dash are as rare as teeth. There is a company in that has reproduction ones—but at like $350 for a set of five, it a bit extravagant just for … So I sourced some LEDs and my own; while not original, match the gauges quite and best of all, they An original Marchal headlamp—a upgrade for the lighting—came up on eBay and I resist.

Probably paid too much for it but cool and collectable in its own right, and it looks great with the cool cat logo!

The standard of course would never with the fairing fitted (as if the wasn’t going to have anyway). I had a set of race clip-ons but I wanted an adjustable set. I on adjustable Tomaselli clip-ons; made and with infinite so they can be tuned to your position instead of the other way

Very nice and well it. I also welded lugs to the and installed folding Tarozzi and levers.

The 32mm Dell’Orto carbs got a refurbishment and rebuild, and I to find a modern replacement for the air filters. The original LaFranconi were particularly ugly and had to go. The real option for replacements Contis: the sound is unmistakable and

The ones on the bike are original 1978, but have been and re-chromed … several times.

The GTS had 40-spoke Radaelli  Italian ‘chrome’ rims that were rust when we got the bike. were replaced with aluminum Borrani  rims from a Guzzi dealership that was off all its old bits and had a shed full of rims They were enough to look through all and send me the best two. The rim is identical to the ones used by on the SS, with the exception of the part stamping.

The rear had to have the holes re-angled to suit the hub, because Moto have shaft drive and a much larger rear

All the cables were replaced and a  clutch installed. The new springs too much for Sue to pull, if the truth be the clutch was uncomfortably heavy for me I can image how she felt. I took out two of the (leaving four), which the pull to civilized levels, and the bike out for a good caning.

Low and nothing I did made it slip. So it run this way, with a light clutch pull it starts to slip, at which I will pull two of the springs and them with the two new ‘spares’. it begins to to slip again add the full complement of springs.

I there’s about 10 or 15 years of there before she’ll new springs.

I researched the original 900SS silver and blue colours and had a local guy here everything. The finishing touch was the rear cylinder bevel window … you can see the cam drive bevel working away. With front and 36-tooth rear this 900 GTS has top speed of 127mph

Ducati claimed 121 mph for a new GTS in 1978, but I that may have been a bit
