Lots of people have long and hard that editions, no matter how special the how limited the production run and how ostensibly the result has been, they are worth the price premium inevitably attract. And I’ve been a vociferous supporter of logic. I mean, look at the 999R for example.

Sure, so got some good quality tacked on, but at the end of the day it’s just a biposto with some and a price tag almost twice of the standard machine. And as such, it possibly be worth it.

Well carefully to the sound of a bike eating his words. Because, price tag or not, the Ducati is worth every penny.

Now probably a comment worth It is, after all, an awful lot of for a motorbike. As many, many told me during the test. But the is that if you took a standard 999 and a beautiful carbon fairing, seat unit, carbon mudguard, cam belt covers and magnesium cam covers and Marchesini top line Ohlins suspension and damper, Brembo radial and a few subtle engine tweaks to power you would spend twice as much.

And it would ultimately, be a base model so resale time it would be indeed to see all that money get away. No, purely in financial the 999R is actually quite value.

But the real value of a like this is not financial. Ducati, more than any in the range, cries out to be ridden. more than any other it is an object of beauty as well. I’m not sure why the 999R manages to so much better than the less than utterly base machine. Even now we got used to the looks, there is about the 999 that jars, the 999R is, simply, gorgeous.

Maybe it’s the depth of the maybe the red frame and one piece Maybe it’s the quality of the hanging off the ends. Maybe all of the above, I don’t know. But I do know is that wherever we people stopped, looked, and commented. Not a single person had bad to say about the bike, whether were bikers themselves or passers by.

Everyone said it was and that it looked expensive and Then, of course, they all it was an awful lot of money for a bike. I you’ll have to get used to if you get one.

For those of you not familiar Ducati sportsbikes in general and the 999 in there are some things you know. First of all, are physically small and somewhat minded in design. Secondly, are bikes that really to be ridden properly.

By that I that they don’t respond well to be ridden in a hearted way. Sure, you can bimble around savouring the and the looks but the whole package alive when you get your down and start concentrating on you’re doing rather just acting as ballast. And they are not bikes for shrinking

Especially the 999R. No, really.

is a Ducati trademark. They a horrible, dry rattling noise running. A by-product of the dry clutch almost all of the Bologna machines as standard.

Now under normal clutch rattle is the loudest you’ll hear on a Ducati, at one supplied for road test. Ducati are very good and give us bikes to test are exactly as the customer would them. The 999R is a slight to this rule. The bike as we it is still in standard customer it’s true.

But the 999R comes with two exhausts – a standard wheezy and affair stuffed full of converters and baffle plates, um, the other one. The test came with the other one Quiet, discreet and subtle it is

But the enormous carbon resonator box of the system that comes as with the ‘R sounds simply and drowns out the unpleasant mechanical quite nicely. It’s one of noises that, despite our that it is totally illegal in of volume, provokes no more an amused and indulgent smile everyone who encounters it. I rode to Hastings, bastion of the blue-rinse, and up outside a coffee shop on the

Lots and lots of elderly saw and heard me arrive and many of walked last and looked at the And not one of them tutted, shook heads or looked disapproving. the pair of West Sussex’ in their Volvo patrol

It’s a bike that you can’t object to.

So we know the Ducati 999R gives you the acceptability of Terry Waite and Minogue rolled into Which on it’s own is worth the price. But it gets better.

All you to do is ride to see how.

Swing a leg the 999R and you will be astonished how small it is. For those brought up on a of Japanese performance machinery, the will come as something of a shock. The narrow tank as though your knees are Many riders will have ridden something skinny, while most will immediately feel as they are back on a 125. Or likely, given the price and the age of most buyers, that are on their old Suzuki X7 or RD250.

The bars are the perfect reach and the seat, which seems so and unyielding before, provides a amount of padding. The mirrors are both of them, and are about as as one would expect. Actually better than one might but not by much.

Turn the key, the display panel do its thing and the starter button. Oh yes, a Ducati alright. The starter against the mighty compression, for all the world as though the battery is and you’re going to have to start it. And then, provided you remembered to set the choke, it catches just two or three turns.

And the and its uncle knows that you just started a Ducati with a race Termignoni system. My elderly neighbour it was marvellous, but you may want to check yours. Give it a moment to get and revel in the noise.

This, my is what a Ducati should like.

Pop the sidestand up and notice how it neatly into a cutout in the Quality. Pull in the clutch and first. Yes, you can comfortably use the with just the one hand.

away and you will discover first is a little on the tall No problem – dry clutches are pretty and slipping a bit to pull away be a problem. Notice how precise the is, even at low speed, and how little is needed to turn. In fact, you may need to be careful at first to clouting apexes rather clipping them as the turn-in is than you’ll probably be to.

At low speed the 999R does a little as though it is going to over, though it only a few minutes to get used to it. You may be surprised to that riding through is nowhere near as painful as have been led to believe. Oh, the is by no means the perfect commuter, but the width, incredible presence and sharp responses mean actually it’ll hustle up to the quite nicely if necessary.

And wrists, though they’ll they’ve done it, won’t seized up either.

But that’s silly. You do not, under any buy a Ducati 999R to ride in Or if you do then you seriously need professional help. No, the 999R in the country.

Or, even better, on a

Get out of town, drop behind the and let it rip. OK, at least two of those are reckless at best. Getting the bubble will require the of contortions that really work on the road. Unless you a stepladder to get on, that is.

The bubble is small indeed.

And letting her rip on the is an almost instant way to say goodbye to licence, liberty and possibly More on that later. For let’s look at the riding

Out of town that slightly keen to drop in steering communicative and alive. And it makes the incredibly easy to position where you want to be. All the time. The when you need them, are applying immense retardation at the of a single finger.

They tyres did the business as – Michelin Pilot Race were well worn but up fast and gripped like They were even OK in the provided I kept them sliding occasionally but giving so warning that it was never a especially with the rather way that the fact I’m on someone very expensive motorbike in the rain tends to make me

My long term GSX-R 750 is a that I really, really It’s precise, focussed, fast and all-round brilliant. And yet the makes it feel like a – soft, springy, heavy and

No really – it is that much of a Approach a bend and will the into the right spot. the right spot. Need to some speed? brush two over the lever and the big Brembos scrub it off instantly.

Drop a look through the corner and already turning, hitting the right apex and getting on the power to pick her up. Smile, even more and repeat ad

A word about performance On paper, 140bhp from a bike isn’t all that. despite all the exotic material, still got a dry weight of 181kg to around. So performance isn’t to be that good, is it? I mean, alone should mean the 999R will get destroyed by any Japanese sportsbike.

Even little GSX-R has a better to weight ratio. And the laws of are absolute and immovable, right?

Nothing picks up like a big vee twin, and no big vee twin like a Ducati 999R. And I know why. This is a rolling paradox. It has no real and feels slightly flat and yet approaching serious throttle sees the numbers on the digital change faster than it can up. It picks up the front wheel but stays perfectly stable and steers.

And we know that’s impossible. You can put knee down on every in any conditions but it still works if you stay neat and tucked in. physically tiny yet I rode 2000 miles on it and didn’t get a ache, even with my gear in a rucksack (‘cos the only way to carry anything on bike).

Let me put this into Regulars will know we use the Nurburgring and that I have there. I’ll go public and now, and say that with a of days to get comfortable and no traffic I happily go for the lap record around the Nordschleife on a Ducati 999R these tyres.

And I reckon I even be able to get it, too.

I superlatives. Once something is the the fastest, whatever, you run out of things to the next, better one as. Which me a problem here. Because the 999R is, by far, the best I have ever ridden.

The desirable, most exciting on the planet. Today, anyway.
