Road Test by Adrian

When I first saw the Ducati at the NEC a couple of years ago I said to Now there’s an ugly bike, are Ducati doing by building It is complete departure from the exotica the factory is renowned for in fact I would have so far as to say that it was not a Ducati design I first saw it. But times change, and impressions can sometime be completely

Sometimes it takes me a while to my mind up about a new bike riding it for the first time. I collected the Multistrada from I also collected a 1000DS I started to ride immediately. It until about a week that we swapped bikes after being told by You’ve just got to ride Multistrada It’s just you can take so many liberties it so we swapped and I did!

My first on the Multistrada was in fact on the pillion for 40-50 miles, I found out that it was indeed very on the back, and that the bike had of grunt for some serious either with a pillion or lots of luggage. We then bikes and I took the quick home to get out of London, the M25, oh it had to be done!

On the way back I took the way home and exited the M40 and off into the countryside for some rather serious riding. That’s I saw the Multistrada come into own. Having spent a happy day riding these on all sorts of serious sportsbikes, customs and other strange I suddenly saw the light!

The Ducati Multistrada is possibly the all-rounder on these roads, so much fun to ride with perfect blend of sportsbike and performance with a high position akin to something a 2 wheeled Range Rover. It is has a great riding position, practical and when needed can do a little off-road work as

The 1000 DS ‘Dual Spark’ that powers the Multistrada is the variant that is currently to the 1000DS Supersport, and the Monster. new engine gives you effortless and torque, it’s not arm-wrenching but the way it in to the design and approach of the bike lets you use all of it. There is a little through various parts of the at certain speeds, but it’s that annoying, it’s enough to let you know you are on an Italian

There’s lots of torque from just off idle, and it rev up to 8700rpm redline easily in all of the 6 gears. In 6th gear at a leisurely you will see a legal 70mph says that it is relaxed and has a potential as a tourer.

The Multistrada on a signature Ducati trellis . it feels just right for the giving a solid feeling and rigid. The front end is fitted USD Showa forks and the rear a monoshock set-up as found on 999 and 749, It rides with confidence and gives you a grin time.

There are some differences in the however, mainly the 165mm of and also the compression damping has been re-positioned to the outside of the legs, this makes it so easier to adjust over the versions. The end result is that the has sportsbike handling, can soak up and ruts, and with the 24-degree angle has a near perfect of agility and stability on all roads. One I must say here is I am not used to any having a good steering but to my surprise the Multistrada actually

This together with a low of gravity make tight … easy for anyone. The is a little heavy, but then it reminds you that you are in fact on a it’s not a problem in town or at all. The gearbox is very indeed, it is positive and slick town, out on the open roads or at a track day. Trackday? I you say, well yes is the answer.

I that this bike in hands will seriously many a sportsbike, after all it has all the handling qualities of any other

On other more sports Ducatis the injection system has a to jerkiness around town, was something I could not find on the The Marelli system is slightly to the normal version and has no cold lever like the 1000DS or Monster. It is crisper to ride in and has great response right up the rev range. You can bring into all those 84 horses to get the 200kg of going in a flash.

I suppose sometime in the future we see a 998 or maybe a 999 powered version, day will be fantastic if this is anything to go by! In the braking department have yet again set the standards for good brakes, in fact the fitted to the Multistrada are the same as you find on the 999, 749, and so on. You get fantastic stopping power, feel and tyre squealing both ends.

Of course Brembo ‘Gold series’ to be need I say any more!!

So after all the stuff what have we got Well on first impressions the is not the best looking bike in the but it has character and that’s what it is all nowadays. To top that off the entire delivers an adrenalin rush most other bikes even come close to, user friendly and will you almost anywhere you want to go.

So be put off by first impressions, this has it all and it grows on you very quickly.

The position and general feel of the is that of a slightly grown-up it’s very slim, has bars and a low slung engine. it around the lanes and ‘B’ is just a pleasure with the steering and linear power It’s so easy to just through corners and around bends without a hint of any or deviation off-line, in fact all you to do point it and that’s where it go.

Quick changes of line mid didn’t seem to pose any at all, a couple of Pheasants and a can vouch for that!

The riding is just perfect and pretty as well. The low footrests give of legroom and don’t restrict the clearance in any way. It has a seat of 850mm so maybe some riders will have a difficulty with it’s but with it’s exceptionally low C of G very little high up to balance even on tip-toes.

the bars are quite wide are not a problem in traffic or when the Multistrada has a serious amount of lock and can get you out of a lot of traffic situations ease, there’s so much and control of the bike with the bars and I for one would not want to them for anything smaller, the thing I would possibly about them is the colour. bars on this bike doesn’t quite look I would like to see a set of high alloy bars fitted a brace for that Supermoto touch, these together some hand guards the vast array of Ducati available for the Multistrada.

Up top and in front of the comes the other modification I make. The standard screen is a bit low to give full protection, at speeds the windblast hits me in the upper chest and starts to you around at higher speeds. is a higher version available Ducati and would certainly be a for any type of touring or motorway

Incidentally the top fairing/screen is in fact mounted and moves independently the lower fairing, strange but and it does take a little used to. Also on the subject of a lot more miles I would in the alternative seat from the list due to the ‘plank like’ of the standard one! It was never a on the ordinary roads as you tend to around a lot anyway, but on longer when you are more still in the it does get to you after a while.

about this bike is novel, from the overall to the funky mirrors and built-in They do look very but I can’t help wondering why are so small. Under the rear you have absolutely no storage at all due to the fast that the exhaust are high mounted and there is a converter just where the should be, it does however the pillions rear end warm on runs though!

Instead of storage you have a small glove compartment in the right fairing panel, it doesn’t fit more than a wallet and a of sunglasses and the toolkit, but it’s than no storage at all. The of finish is absolutely typical of a Ducati, it’s well put is fitted with some of the available parts in the biking it has so much style and some trick instrumentation, it really you feel like you are aboard a special machine.

If you are not convinced by now then I suggest you get to you nearest Ducati store and try Apart from the initial and getting used to them its a package. Personally I think it great from all sides, and has of character. Take a look at the accessory catalogue for the Multistrada and kit it out carbon and performance parts, yes are all available for this bike, like it’s Supersports

But that’s where the difference get some panniers, engine and some other off-road stuff and you will have a alternative to the BMW1150GS Adventure will shock almost sportsbike rider on the road!

As Pierre Terblanche says . is important is that it doesn’t unnoticed — it must be it must stand out in the crowd, and it work extremely well.

in the case of the Multistrada they certainly achieved that. The have created a bike re-defines how people perceive and to those customers who buy one I’m of you, I certainly would one of these bikes.
