If you absolutely, positively have to travel very far away on two wheels in style and comfort, you’d be a bit simple to look past Ducati’s uber-plush mega-mile-eater, the Multistrada 1200 S Granturismo. The 1200 S Touring model was pitted against several other 17-inch front-wheelers in a recent comparo (Vol 62 No 24) and faired exceptionally well.

And that’s because it’s an exceptional bike. There’s that amazing Ducati V-twin punching out 102.9kW (128hp), carefully controlled by the amazing electronic engine maps (or let loose in Sport mode if you have the cajones); the stunning Ducati Skyhook Suspension (DSS) system which will let you ride nearly any road, no matter how atrocious, with poise and grace; and all this is combined with stellar levels of comfort.

The Granturismo builds on this already excellent platform to deliver a veritable touring weapon. There’s a stack of luggage space on offer: two panniers (58 litres) and a topbox (48 litres) all with internal soft bags. The pannier removal system is one of the best I’ve ever used – turn the key, lift the handle and slide out of the rack. Reverse the process when you’re ready to get back on and you’re on your way without any fuss.

The topbox also has a pillion backrest built in which I’ve been reliably informed is very comfortable.

Light is very important when you’re riding a motorcycle in this massive country, especially in winter when the days feel about 20 minutes long. The LED lights on all the Multis are great but with the addition LED spotlights, the Granturismo is a really fast lighthouse. The beams throw more out to the side rather than enhancing the forward view which is fine because the standard lights are excellent.

Comfort levels have been even further enhanced with 20mm higher-set handlebars, a comfort seat and a higher screen. While the screen looks huge, it’s tinted and thus isn’t unpleasing on the eye. It’s very effective, though – one of the few I’ve ridden and barely had to duck down to get full coverage.

The bar position is great, however smaller people might think it’s a bit too high.

Also potentially hindering smaller people is the comfort seat. It feels a fair bit wider than the seat found on the lesser-spec models, which resulted in me having to tip-toe the bike around and I’m 190cm tall. For me, it was worth it because it’s very comfortable – but if you can’t keep the bike upright when you’re stopped that’s going to be a big issue.

If you’re a midget and do want to ride the Granturismo, there’s engine protection bars should you put it on its side.

A touring bike needs touring rubber and the Ducati mothership is rolling around on Pirelli Angel GT tyres. I spent a decent amount of the test period in the rain and they gave great feel and confidence in crappy road conditions. Combined with the DSS system, you’re getting excellent feedback about what’s going on underneath you – and confidence is key when riding fast.

You’ll be forking out $30,490 to ride a Granturismo. While it seems like a lot of money you’re getting a whole lot of bike for the price because with this thing you will be able to go anywhere sealed in outstanding comfort and even take on some light off-road stuff if you want to. And you’ll have an absolute ball while you’re doing it.
