Ducati Multistrada 620

A Duke for the Masses

THE NEW-for-2005 620 Multistrada offers a comfortable great real-world performance and a style which might make it one of the most popular bikes around.

For Aussie the bike makes a lot of sense – which can cope with the Australian road, a sensible riding position and an engine is at its best at the sort of speeds licence will thank you

There are three bikes in the range: the Multistrada (620, the tested here), Multistrada DS (an updated version of the original and the Multistrada 1000 S DS (a high version).

The only one not coming to is the Matt-black Multistrada Dark

Priced at $14,995 (plus on costs) the new Multistrada isn’t but it’s not out of the ballpark, either – aren’t many machines capable, this interesting and much fun for less money – the under 15 grand are often old often disguised as something

The 620′s powerplant is a Ducati – a 90-degree air-cooled V-twin two desmodromically actuated valves means there’s a lobe on the overhead camshaft which the valve as well as one to open the – no springs in here). It displaces 618cc and is fed by fuel

It offers good midrange and has a better-than-expected bottom-end for easy drag races. The top-end – 63 horses at 9500rpm – isn’t this bike is all about – rev the real hard and it’ll go OK, but if you want top-end performance, offers a 1000cc Multistrada…

the 620′s engine really is at highway speeds.

From the engine is delightful, revving and offering a good turn of without ever feeling it’s going to spin the wheel up or highside you – intimidating not.

Indeed, I reckon for the or heavier than average I think the 620 Multistrada would be a bike, but unfortunately for those it’s too powerful to comply LAM legislation, so you can’t ride one until you’ve got a full

The fuel injection system is never hesitating or feeding too fuel on the overrun. Fuel was a strong point of the bike; the test it averaged around

A feature of the bike is the Power Clutch with slipper but I’d actually been riding the a while before I discovered new features. I thought it had a nice, and light clutch, but it turned out to be new which makes the bike to ride. A slipper clutch releases a little if the rider is too on downshifts, preventing momentary wheel lock-ups.

I’m surprised to see sort of technology on such a as the Multistrada, but it’s not a bad thing.

has used the same steel frame for the 620 as the one used on the 1000cc but the seat is 20mm lower – through less padding, it’s a very disappointing pad. Add a sheepskin for anything distant than commuting.

Ergonomically, though, the bike is – the relationship between handlebars, and footpegs is just right, a riding position which is all day and still sporty enough to for great fun when tipping the ’bars into twisties.

The change in the chassis department is the of a conventional twin-sided swingarm of the single-sided unit on the 1000. a hydroformed steel unit is undoubtedly cheaper than a unit. At 5.7kg it’s not heavy, the hydroforming manufacturing (which uses high water to form the shape) helps here.

Suspension is by 43mm Marzocchi forks and a Sachs rear shock. ends offer some but are pretty good in standard – I found little reason to and I doubt many owners either.

The brakes work and belie their relatively low 300mm Brembo discs twin-piston floating calipers up and a similarly-gripped 245mm rotor at the

Equipment and the ride

The Multistrada is example of Ducati’s belief in bikes which look and differently to other manufacturers. will hate the styling, but OK; part of the attraction is that the is different to other offerings.

No one else offers a fairing is split halfway – the instruments, and headlight are mounted to the handlebars, but not the half of the fairing. The mirrors the indicators incorporated, and are wider for offering a good view of the traffic.

Other improvements last year’s 1000 have made it to the 620 include an sidestand and a taller screen – it offers good upper-body for what looks like a fairing.

There’s a whole of accessories available for the Multistrada, performance parts, luggage and a GPS navigator.

The accessory list to the versatility of the Multistrada. the bike is at doing almost anything – touring or sports riding, the takes it all in its stride and begs for

In commuting mode the upright position gives a great of traffic, the flexible engine and power delivery mean through the traffic is easy and the travel suspension makes the occasional kerb to get to a good spot a doddle.

On the open road the fairing the wind blast off your for comfort during all-day although the thinly-padded seat have your arse before you’ve emptied the 15 litre tank. The optional make carrying the load

In sports mode the bike charges through corners, its modest power output you’ll want to keep speeds up – luckily the suspension and are up to the task here and allow punting.

For many Ducati led the field in basing its bikes on race machines. machines like the 999 and 749 are still of this, the new Multistrada points to a new – that you can have a sportsbike is fast in the twisties while being capable as a tourer or and still offer that and soul which comes Ducati’s V-twins.

Although many Australian will dismiss the 618cc as being too small for serious they’ll be doing themselves a – this machine is capable, fun and to to ride in all situations.

Up a bumpy road (and if you know of any in which aren’t bumpy, let me know) it’s probably than a race replica

For $15,000 its easy to buy many faster, bigger bikes the Multistrada, but if you’re looking for versatile, non-threatening and with a V-twin thump, the Multistrada is to beat.
