Ducati S4RS to Lose Crown as Fastest Monster Ever?

The Best ever Ducati Monster if you believe more power is always better was the Monster S4RS.  Now Ducati seems poised to launch a new über Monster for 2014 powered by a version of the testastretta 11º engine found in the Ducati Diavel and Multistrada 1200 .

Carefully ‘leaked’ spy shots show a Ducati Monster with what looks like a 1198cc testastretta 11º power plant.  It could conceivably be the new 821cc engine that debuted in the Ducati Hypermotard but to our eye the chunkier engine size and thick looking headers lead us to conclude its the larger 150bp plus engine this time around.

This doesn’t come as much of a surprise.  We warned you last year If You Want an Air-Cooled Ducati Buy it Now .

“Three years ago you could find a 2-valve, air-cooled power plant in four distinct Ducati model ranges.  This year it will be just one.  And the year after that?  We say none.”

For 2013 the only air-cooled Ducati model range is the  Monster  that is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Ducati could hardly kill off the Pantah based power plant in its anniversary year but emission and noise laws are slowly eliminating the air-cooled engines.

Until these photos broke cover the new version of the Monster has always been air-cooled with the  most powerful 100hp version of the Desmodue power plant in the  Monster 1100EVO .

With slow sales of the 1198cc version of the Streetfighter causing the range to be dropped to just the high spec S model (and that isn’t even available in the USA, Ducati’s largest market) the writing was on the wall for big Streetfighter. Instead the Streetfighter seems to have found its sweet spot with the nicely balanced 848 Alley Fighter model which we rate as the Best Ducati for the Street .

With the expected deletion of the 1198cc Streetfighter there is room once again for the Monster to take on the mantle of the model for those who prefer near Superbike performance sans a fairing.

We still expect the 821cc engine to find its way into the Monster along with a smaller perhaps 500cc version harking back to the original Pantah.  That would allow the 696 / 795 / 796 range to be replaced.  Also expect a tricked up Monster 1100EVO Final Edition to see out the air-cooled era with.

The new model could be unveiled as early as the Intermot show in Cologne, Germany especially if the company is preparing more surprises for the EICMA show in Milan this November.
