Ducati ST2

I consider the ST2 to have my first “proper” bike.

I’d had British bikes when I was a and had a brief fling with a GT250 in my twenties. I’d then “reborn” in my forties and, for that seemed perfectly at the time, bought a Harley 883 Then in 1998, having the Harley wasn’t what I wanted I started looking for a bike and, admittedly, heavily influenced by the motorcycling I rolled up at the local Ducati to look at the ST2 and was immediately smitten.

in mind that at this I had been back on a bike for than two years, I rode an 883 Sportster and, in all honesty, I was not a rider. In fact, I was a very rider. Generally I was totally in confidence on a bike, I was scared to in the wet and had more rides with than not.

I think the only thing kept me riding was the occasional free ride on a hot Summers

I’d actually come back to with a lot of confidence. My memories of were all good and I’d done a taster course with a instructor, firstly on a 125 followed by a 500 and enjoyed it.

But the ST2 found me out. It was faster and more powerful anything I’d ever owned. So now I’d got a bike I desperately needed to how to ride it safely.

Very after buying the Ducati I a “Bike Safe” course North Wales Police at Colwyn Bay Police Station – brilliant! I learned more in one than I had in years of riding. one of the instructors was married to a friend, and he and I the hundred miles each way on both days, which taught me as much as the course and, more importantly, cured me of my “wet weather phobia”.

There’s nothing quite a long high speed on very wet country lanes, an advanced riders’ lines, to quickly give you confidence in bike and, to a lesser your ability!

In truth I really enjoyed the ST2.

it was my shortcomings that were the – I simply wasn’t a good rider to get the most out of it.

Later on it was the shortcomings. It was plagued with and electrical issues. I seemed to be it to the dealer every other Thank goodness it had a two year

I believe Ducati have out their quality issues days. If they have I’m because once I was a sufficiently rider to be able to judge I the ST2 was a great bike! Unfortunately I be testing their quality again having now become to legendary Honda reliability.

Towards the end of our ownership of the ST2 we started to further afield even there was always the concern we be coming home on the back of a

Probably the best and longest free trip the bike did was a run to Brands Hatch on the weekend of the Superbikes meeting in 1999. We hoping to see Foggy do the business. It was a hot weekend, probably too hot for such a ride, and although Foggy come through on his Ducati, at mine did the best part of six miles without missing a

The ST2 was never a particularly comfortable It wasn’t anywhere near as as a sports bike but, a sports tourer, it did still a sporting element about it and I was in confidence and undertaking longer comfort was beginning to be an issue. I say it hurt like the little RS250 I owned, but after any in excess of a hundred miles on the ST2 my body was certainly beginning to aches and pains.

Two things happened early in to hasten the departure of the ST2.

with my new found confidence we on a motorcycling holiday to the USA. As providing us with some experiences, that holiday me to re-think what I wanted a motorcycle. We were covering of miles a day on a big Harley and, we were always glad to our destination and get off, we never with the aches and pains riding the Ducati entailed.

about a month after from the States I joined a of riders on a trip down to for a tour around the Triumph

The trip down was uneventful and the excellent but when we got back to the the heavens opened. My friends on taking the scenic route and intended to make a couple of along the way, but I decided to the fastest route as I needed to get by late afternoon and the weather have removed much of the of the A and B roads, so I headed across to up the M6 north.

I needed to re-fuel as I was pulling onto the slip at Hilton Park services, I down to see clouds of smoke from under the fairing. again the Ducati electrical had struck and once again I was on my way in a recovery vehicle!

The Ducati was its’ second birthday, also marked the end of its’ period so I decided it would be sensible to look for a more bike and, with the of the big, comfortable Harley fresh in my mind, I started at touring bikes, eventually on a new Honda ST1100 Pan European.
