Bologna, May 18th 2004 — It was a fo a lifetime. I was off to Italy on a 10 day paid vacation for any sportbike enthusiast, behind the guise of work. We our weekend off at the nearby Monza Superbike round on May 16th at the and beautiful 101 year old circuit, drove our rent-a-racer some 150 down the Autostrada to the Adriatic town of Rimini for the Ducati World Ducati Week may 17-24th which proved to be one of the biggest manufacturer produced events ever (only by Harley-Davidson with their gatherings in Milwaukee), and certainly THE for sportbike enhusiasts!

Our ultimate trip to Italy for a World race and World Ducati wouldn’t be complete without a Meca, or in this instance the Factory and Museum in Bologna, on the Autostrada hald way between Milan and Rimini. But we couldn’t there. Could we get a visit to the top Ducati Corse racing home of the World Championship Superbikes and race winning machines?

The Corse race shop is closed to everyone from visitors on the factory tour, to dealers, Ducati world distributors, employees and the press.

But it was to call in a few favors to our buddies, Cose Team Manager Ciabatti and Superbike Press JulianThomas. The fact that is the biggest sportbike website in the helped us get our foot in the door, but my our beautiful SBK World Superbike Dates calendar girls to be the Ducati Corse umbrella at Seca each year had more to getting me in than else!

Desmosedici engines are everywhere in the engine asembly inside Ducati Corse. I was one of the first outsiders to see inside the V-4 MotoGP engine. I picked up a piston from one of the engine with rings and wrist that was only tall to hold the rings -with no side skirts. It felt paper, probably weighing 4 ounces. I asked Julian if the wrist pin was make of titatium the assembly was so light).

He replied, No. it’s aluminum. That’s how light a big 250cc piston ßassembly on a titanium rod has to be to turn 16,500 rpm.

This Corse engine is suspicious — Is that a in our pocket or are we just happy to see

He felt better when we him we were just excited to see so exposed and … Desmosedici.

Corse Superbike Team to new facility

On our visit to the Ducati race team shop behind locked doors in Bologna motorcycle factory we found the MotoGP team in The expanded growth of the race into MotoGP, together increased motorcycle production in the has forced the Corse Superbike to move to a new building across It is expected the MotoGP team move to the new building as well by the end of the season as sales of new Ducati continues to grow and more space is needed at the main

On the particular day of our visit to the Corse Shop the MotoGP race mechanics, bikes and the big 80-foot race transporter were on way back from a Monday session at LeMans, France, the day the LeMans MotoGP race Still, there was a fairly crew of technicians in the Corse shop building new and rebuilding Desmosedici engines and MotoGP

Later in the week both the factory Superbike and MotoGP teams and transorters with the and bikes would be set up and on display at the for WDW2004 where fans meet the riders, mechanics and see the bikes in person. With the also firing up the bikes and them to the track for demonstartion that had the fans cheering in

MotoGP bikes being and assembled for both the factory Marlboro team of Loris and Troy Bayliss with the new Two chassis and motor, and the Breil team of Ruben Xaus and Hodgsen with last Generation One bike and chassis. In 2 these will be available for the

The Corse Race Shop which is now devoted exclusively to is about the size of 2 large school auditoriums or basket courts, and uses a warehouse modular steel upper level for additional parts There is an engine building separated by parts shelving, a building area, a large dyno room, and then a parts area with levels of additional parts.

we didn’t get to see on this day due to the time of also visiting the Ducati Factory, the Museum, and having in the factory Cafeteria was the Corse Design Department which is all computer design aided. Or the in the factory where main like the engine cases be sand cast and CNC machined, and are fabricated. As is typical in many operations, many main like carbon fibre exhaust systems, swingarms and are farmed out to subcontractors outside the

The dyno room is behind the doors to the side of the bike room. You can see a second floor with riders’ leathers, and body parts.

Ducati’s Team Budget

During our exclusive tour of the Ducati Race Shop in Bologna, Superbike Press Manager Thomas told us the Ducati race team had a budget year of $32 million dollars between MotoGP and Superbike, some 120 employees working in the deparment. Thats out of a factory just 1000 employees who build around 40,000 per year.

Obviously we don’t sell motorcycles to justify our huge for racing, explained Julian. 3/4s of our racing budget from our major sponsors Marlboro and Fila.

Ducati always be involved in World because we believe first and in racing the bikes which we to the public and that means We are involved in MotoGP to elevate the and image of Ducati in the world market as an industry leader. And I this is what we are doing well.

If 3/4s of Ducatis $32 dollar race budget from its sponsors, then the $8 million dollars comes the 40,000 bikes per year to customers which works out to $200 per bike. A pretty deal to own a pretty cool with the latest technology a World Championship winning

At the back of the race shop is a area and more warehouse Note the unassembled engines on the shelf. The MotoGP bike in the is one of Loris Capirossi’s 2003 bikes now used for shows and

Claudio and Ruben get down to the nitty gritty

Where but at World Ducati Week at the race track a few days could any sportbike enthusiast Ducati University and have Ducati Corse Director Domenicali (above left) the intimate design details of the MotoGP bike, or have Championship rider Ruben (above right) explain the of the Misano race track you got to go out and ride the track. Awesome..
